Interview with John Monyjok Maluth

What are you working on next?
Right now, I'm working on the published books. I am also tweaking both my website, posts, articles and more so that things are up to date. As an Indie Author, I have to spend more time in both creation, publishing and marketing my books. But, my immediate responsibility is to write and write well. For sure, I will be working on a short story called, "The Fox" towards the end of 2015.
Who are your favorite authors?
My first favorite author is God, the author of the Bible through forty (40) or so different people who never lived at the same place. The Bible is my book. It even taught me English back in 1990s here in Sudan (by then). My other favorite author is Wayner Grudem. He wrote and made clear those confusing dogmas of Christianity. He makes me understand many concepts about the nature, God, Satan and myself. Others are; Dr. Mark Pretorius, Dr. Rabbi Zechariah, Dr. Neil T. Anderson, Walter Trobisch, Dr. Kevin Smith others.
What inspires you to get out of bed each day?
Life. It is crazy. I never know I will be here tomorrow! But there are many things in life. It is life itself that inspires me every morning, each day. I wake up each day and think of what to do next. My daily work is, wake up, sing like a little bird to thank God for life, brush my teeth, dress up for the garden work, come back home and take a shower, get ready for the breakfast, and start the daily work.

The nature inspires me each day. I love the singing little birds around the house. They seem to be praising the Creator of the universe who determines when we live or die.
When you're not writing, how do you spend your time?
I spend my time reading. I read the Bible or the how-to guides. I read books about writing, editing, publishing and marketing books in today's ever changing world. I read the Bible to learn something about God's plan for me and the whole creation around us. I also spend time chatting with my dear wife, Eliza. Sometimes I play with my kids. Sometimes I go for a walk in the fields. I also do farming every evening from 5:00 - 7:00 PM (April-November). I sometimes visit friends and talk few things about life. I don't like spending time on TV.

Oh! I don't even have one.
How do you discover the ebooks you read?
I search for ebooks on Smashwords, Amazon Kindle Store and others. There are thousands of free books on alone! I also use the filter when searching for a book. The book price is the best searching category I use to find the book within range.
Do you remember the first story you ever wrote?
Yes! It was my story. It is scaring, but real, not a fiction. It is titled, "The Scarification Guide". I personally received facial scarification marks in November, 1997 when I was 14. It was very painful! But, I have to endure it or else. You can read the story for free at: if you wish. Just copy and paste the link into your browser's address bar and press the "ENTER" key on the keyboard to open the book page.
What is your writing process?
In my writing process, I first work on the draft of my main points in a book. Well, I must have the book before it is written. I must know what to write before I begin drafting. But, drafting is my first process. After putting the frame, i.e, title, main points, and a conclusion, I begin writing from the first main point to the last. Then, I put the book aside for sometime. After that, I read the book and the editing begins. After editing, I proofread the book. Then, I publish it when it is ready. I find myself correcting the published books all the time. It seems editing is an unending daily routine for me. I would love to update my books whenever I can.
Do you remember the first story you ever read, and the impact it had on you?
Yes! It was a fable. Actually, many of them. There were stories about the fox and crow. The guinea fowls, the monkey and the groundnuts/peanuts and many others. Then, I found the stories in the Bible. These were stories about a God-Man called Jesus the Christ. These stories had changed my whole life. They have changed the way I think about myself, other people, and the the whole world around me.
How do you approach cover design?
I design my ebook and print book covers. It is all about creativity, not the tools you use. I mostly use Microsoft Paint, not Adobe Photoshop. My covers may not look professional, but they communicate the message of the book in a simple language. I have just discovered I can even use Microsoft Word 2007 to design book covers! As I said, it's all about creativity, not the tools you use. I will post the video soon about how to use the Microsoft Word to design book covers.
What are your five favorite books, and why?
(1) The Bible. It is my favorite book because it is full of wisdom and more information about the meaning of life. Don't believe it? Try to read it again and again until you understand what I mean here. (2) Systematic Theology - by Wayner Grudem. It is great because it makes many confusing theories clear to me. (3) The How-To guides (Smashwords Style Guide) for example. They are great because they teach me how to prepare my book and make it available to readers worldwide. (4) The Bondage Breaker - by Dr. Neil T. Anderson. It is great because it is about how to be confident in life. Knowing who I am is important whether I believe in God or not. (5) Victory Over The Darkness - by Dr. Neil Anderson. It is also great because it makes me aware of the real spiritual warfare. You don't believe in spirits? It doesn't affect their existence!
What do you read for pleasure?
Like any other South Sudanese, I don't actually read for pleasure to be honest. I read because I want to learn something new. Maybe I need to develop reading for pleasure (Extensive).
What is your e-reading device of choice?
I use the Kindle for PC because I do not have the "iSomething" yet. I am planning to get an electronic reader apart from my Samsung PC. My computer is not very good for reading. I normally read at night. My PC gets hot and the fan always runs crazy! I really don't have a good reading device for now to be honest. I cannot get a Kindle Reader in Africa. I also want to read while lying down face up. I cannot put my PC right on my tummy.
