Interview with John Howard Reid

What is your e-reading device of choice?
Actually, I never read books on the net. I much prefer to hold a real book in my real hands!
Where did you grow up, and how did this influence your writing?
I grew up in Sydney, Australia, but this fact fact didn't influence my writing to any degree. My big influence, as I answered in a previous question, was the fact that I am related to Robert Louis Stevenson. Dare I say it, but it seems to me that Robert Louis Stevenson is the only 19th century novelist who is still popular today. Even Dickens has faded away!
What motivated you to become an indie author?
The fact that I started off as an indie publisher. One day, Rupert Murdoch said to me, "Why don't you publish your own books?"
Describe your desk
I don't write at a desk. I compose directly on the PC.
What do your fans mean to you?
My fans mean everything to me. I always immediately answer all correspondence sent to me, although I must admit that some agents and publishers tend to hang on to correspondence and are very slow to forward mail!
What inspires you to get out of bed each day?
The fact that my girl friend is already up and about and it's time for breakfast.
What's the story behind your latest book?
I wanted to bring my two main characters, Merryll Manning and Michaela Morris, together. This book became "Michaela Morris in Hollywood".
What do you read for pleasure?
I love reading detective stories, I guess just about every one of the classic storytellers from Conan Doyle to Agatha Christie are my favorites. I also, of course, really admire Robert Louis Stevenson. I am a direct descendant of his grandfather, Robert Stevenson. In my opinion, "The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde", is the finest work of fiction in the English language
What is the greatest joy of writing for you?
Reading reviews in which my books are praised to the skies!
Who are your favorite authors?
Aside from Britishers like Stevenson, Dickens and Conan Doyle, I also like many of the great American novelists. "A Place in the Sun" by Theodore Dreiser is a work of genius.

British moviegoers love U.S. films. Why? A cinema manager in London's East End told me: "People come to the movies to get lost. They don't want to see Frank Sinatra in a U.K. movie, treading the same dreary streets they live in, day in, day out. They want Frank transported to a magic world, or a different world. That's what Hollywood supplies. British films are too realistic, too down-to-earth."
