Interview with Jonathan McMillan

What inspires you to get out of bed each day?
Creating and living a better than average life and all that goes into that. I love finding things that inspire, encourage, and motivate me and sharing them with others. That reminds me that I am part of an incredibly amazing Universe. I have so much to be so grateful for that to spend all my time in bed and not experience and enjoy those things would be disrespectful.
What are you working on next?
Jonathan McMillan's Guide to Better Than Average Goal's is the first of a series of books that comprises the Be Better Than Average curriculum. I'm currently finishing the second and third parts which are Jonathan McMillan's Guide to A Better Than Average Mindset and Jonathan McMillan's Guide to Better Than Average Influences.
Who are your favorite authors?
Lee Child and John Grisham are my two favorite non-fiction authors. I love the Jack Reacher character and the way Child's describes his thinking process.
Brian Tracey, Tony Robbins, Brendon Burchard, Paulo Coelho, Napoleon Hill are a few of my favorite non-fiction writers, just to name a few.
When you're not writing, how do you spend your time?
Reading books, articles, and blogs by people smarter than me. Listening to audio books and lectures by people smarter than me. Watching YouTube of people smarter than me. Studying people smarter than me. I also am a member of Toastmasters International. I enjoy watching movies in my free time.
Where did you grow up, and how did this influence your writing?
I grew up in Denver, CO. The neighborhood I grew up in was probably best described as lower middle class. If you're familiar with my story you know I wound up in prison in my early adulthood. A lot of my friends also ended up in prison or at least with felonies.
After analyzing the circumstances that led to so many of failing and studying leaders in the success, personal development, sales industry I decided to write books to help the next generation of kids from neighborhoods like main avoid the pitfalls that got me caught up.
When did you first start writing?
I've been writing in one form or another all of my life. It wasn't until I was in my mid-30s in 2007 that I began to write professionally as a blogger on BlackPlanet. Within six months, I gained a following of close to half a million people.
What's the story behind your latest book?
Many people want to accomplish things. Few plan to accomplish things. I and many of the people I grew up with wound up in prison because we didn't have any goals early on in life. I studied many leaders in the sales, motivational, and personal development industry and found that each and every one of them advocate setting goals to achieve success.
My latest book is part one of three that breaks down the principles of living a better than average life and proof of what you can accomplish when you set goals.
