Interview with Jon-Michael Warren

What do you read for pleasure?
I like to read fantasy or science-fiction novels. Recently I've been enjoying the 'Divergent' series by Veronica Roth. But I would say my favorite series is A Song of Ice and Fire by George R. R. Martin, simply because of the honesty with which he represents the medieval era.
Describe your desk
My desk is an end-table sitting in front of an armchair with a laptop sitting on top of it. I have virtually no room, because the little that is left over has a mouse sitting on it.
When did you first start writing?
I started writing before I ever even started school; I'm 19 years old now, and it's been an absolutely amazing journey going from writing little stories about me and my friends to being a published author.
What's the story behind your latest book?
Tunnel was inspired by the video game Metro 2033 (which is also a book.) I loved the setting, and thought it would be an excellent setting for my story. I wrote about 90% of the story on a computer at my high school, and took it home on a flash drive. It was published in August, three months after I graduated.
What motivated you to become an indie author?
I saw the different publishers and printing companies, and it never felt like my stories or my mindset would fit with them. I've never wanted to be JUST a science-fiction author, or JUST a post-apocalyptic author. Not all the stories we want to tell fit into a specific genre every time.
What are you working on next?
I am currently working on a novel called 'The Last Job.' It is about an ex-Army Ranger who loses everything that matters to him: his children, his home, and his job. So he decides to get revenge and rob the bank where he used to work.
