Interview with Jose A. Toro

What are your five favorite books, and why?
Bleak House, David Copperfield for their literary merit and historical value. Bone Tree for its narrative. World Without End for great subplots. Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy and Smiley's People are great espionage stories the way espionage is. The Jackdaws for the same reason.
What do you read for pleasure?
Read. Paint oils. When I can, build historical ship models. Watch the better shows on television.
Describe your desk
Neat and small. Has a computer and printer on it. To the right are the matters I'm currently working on.
Where did you grow up, and how did this influence your writing?
Grew up in poverty in a single-parent household in New York City. Welfare family. Early entry into the Air Force and being accepted as intelligence agent and subsequently commissioned bolstered my live immensely. Becoming a lawyer and senior prosecutor at the US Justice Department made my adult life great. All my experiences have influenced what I have written and what I will write in the future.
When did you first start writing?
In the past ten years.
What's the story behind your latest book?
Emotional unstable and bright people. Ambitious and bad-faith human beings. Biological weapons and unconventional warfare. Politicians, military people and scientists devoid of moral values.
How has Smashwords contributed to your success?
My association with it began recently. I'll know in a few months. But I'm very impressed with the depth and scope of its activities. Also, the people who have helped me navigate its site have been extraordinary.
What is the greatest joy of writing for you?
Recounting my experiences using fictitious narratives and people. The locales are as accurate as I remember them.
What do your fans mean to you?
They are the larger part of the equation.
What are you working on next?
A prequel and a sequel to Conspirators.
Who are your favorite authors?
John le Carre is the first among many. Greg Iles, John Gresham, Richard North Patterson, Frederick Forsythe, Ken Follett, Len Deighton, Elizabeth George, Nora Roberts as J. D. Robb. Charles Dickens, Robert Louis Stephenson, Victor Hugo, H. G. Wells and Jules Verne. Mark Twain, Jack London. Many others.
What inspires you to get out of bed each day?
A good breakfast, full English being among my favorites.
When you're not writing, how do you spend your time?
Reading. Occasionally painting oils. Building historical ships. Watching the good shows in television. Cooking, attempting unusual methods.
Do you remember the first story you ever read, and the impact it had on you?
David Copperfield. An orphan whose world opens to a better life is not much different to what I may have gone though in my life.
How do you approach cover design?
I am artist. I examine the context of the story, the people and the locales. I draw a composite of those parts and form a whole of them and simply them to make them that project an appealing and meaningful message.
