Interview with Joseph E Koob II

What are your five favorite books, and why?
"The Once and Future King," T.H. White. -- In my opinion one of the best Arthurian books out there, and a masterpiece of the craft of writing.

"Steppenwolf," Herman Hesse-- Just who I am.
What do you read for pleasure?
Mystery/Thrillers; Fantasy and Science Fiction; Cookbooks; History and Fictionalized History
Describe your desk
Almost always a mess -- even though I do clean it up occasionally, it never stays that way.
Where did you grow up, and how did this influence your writing?
All over the world -- life as an Army brat. Lots of new experiences, which helps with creativity and knowledge in general and more-so of people and the world. On the negative side -- hard to make lasting friendships.
When did you first start writing?
High school, sophomore year
What's the story behind your latest book?
Inspiration from the turmoil of the late 60s and early 70s.
What motivated you to become an indie author?
Hard to get anyone to look at your work anymore. Used to get my books to senior editors; now you can't even find an agent.
How has Smashwords contributed to your success?
Not sure I would qualify this as success, but at least my work is being seen.
What is the greatest joy of writing for you?
Putting down what I feel and imagine on paper and then, especially, having people read and enjoy what I write or be influenced positively by what I write about.
What do your fans mean to you?
It makes me happy that they have gotten something from my efforts.
What are you working on next?
Publishing my seven book Sword and Sorcery Fantasy.
What inspires you to get out of bed each day?
Life -- live it the best you can.
When you're not writing, how do you spend your time?
Fixing things, helping others, walking the dog, exercising (riding bike, abs, lifting weights, etc.), golf, fishing, hunting, reading. Hint: I keep busy.
What is your writing process?
Fiction: Never have had any problem with ideas -- they just come to me. I sit down and plunge into it as fast as my two index fingers can fly over the keyboard. Working out plots is done on long walks, typically. Non-fiction: extensive research into subject, lots of notes, large format outline, type.
