Interview with Joy Villa

Where did you grow up, and how did this influence your writing?
I grew up in Santa Barbara, CA right across the beach. It was stunning! I read books like "Island of The Blue Dolphin" and studied the Native American ways of life, which made me explore nature. Three defining tools of my childhood: a microscope, antique binoculars, and a black and white video camera. I created skits and plays, and took photos of bugs and my dolls dressed up. I was obsessed with Victorian fashion and style, and made old fashion lamps out of coffee cans. I was a wild and free child left on my own to create and write as much as I wanted, which shaped me. I was always encouraged to share my poetry, and I did, self publishing and printing a collection of my favorite poems with drawings.
Describe your desk
It's open, spacious, near a window overlooking the lake and contains only 3 books, a Lego pink notebook, Dan brown's "Inferno", and a sparkly drawing made for me by my 5 year old niece.
I keep it as empty as possible, otherwise it'll get cluttered, quickly! I always have a cup of hot tea or coffee, and usually a freshly made green juice. Headphones for listening to music a I write, my business cards to keep me focused, and my daily "To Do Battleplan". I have a few other pink items, because it's my favorite color, and it inspires me.
What's the story behind your latest book?
I have been traveling on tour modeling and performing, and everyday I would get inspired to write. In between shows, in the car, on the plane, I would just get an idea and start flowing. after 1 and a half years of this, I realized if I didn't turn these poems into actual songs, what would I do with them? They would go to waste, unless I published. I gathered them all up, did some quick editing, and got them out as quick as I could before my next Asia tour. I made it the day before leaving for the plane!
What is the greatest joy of writing for you?
Being able to freely express myself, through characters I created. No judgements, no opinions, no compromising. Just me and whatever words and visions I choose to put down. And when others find pleasure in them, ah, that is just the best, most assuring feeling there is!
What do your fans mean to you?
Everything. If they are happy with what I do, I am happy. if they re disappointed, I'm disappointed. Their views and comments affect me more than anyone else's, besides my self, of course. I trust my fans with my heart and soul, and they let me know I'm doing the right thing by doing what I love.
What is your e-reading device of choice?
My laptop, iPad mini or my iPhone. I really like iBooks and how simple and easy it is!
What are you working on next?
"The Fit and Sexy Vegan" a mini manual on health, fitness, and living through a plant based diet. It includes beauty tips, recipes, workouts, and personal stories form my 10+ years as a vegan! It's really a fun book that I hope will help a lot of people get healthier and feel good about themselves.
