Interview with Jose Rodriguez

Where did you grow up, and how did this influence your writing?
I grew up in Aurora, Il. I guess you could say I've always been interested in fantasy/sci-fi, playing games and watching lots of movies growing up.
When did you first start writing?
After high-school.
What's the story behind your latest book?
I wanted to complete the first one and give a satasfying ending.
What motivated you to become an indie author?
I enjoyed reading the My Teacher is an Alien series and Watership Down. I wanted to share my own ideas.
How has Smashwords contributed to your success?
I wouldn't be able to spread the word about my books as much without them.
What do your fans mean to you?
my fans represent my lifeblood, without them I am nothing.
What are you working on next?
There's talk of virtual reality and if our universe is a simulation. It's been giving me ideas among the many I already have.
Who are your favorite authors?
Bruce Coville and Richard Adams.
What inspires you to get out of bed each day?
I recently suffered a stroke that left me with locked-in syndrome. My left side is mostly paralyzed so I need a lot of help with getting in and out of bed, but one of the first things I'll do is get on my laptop, turn on youtube for music, and then write any ideas down. I also can't talk, so writing is a good communication tool.
When you're not writing, how do you spend your time?
Being that I'm now mostly paralyzed, I just think a lot and exercise to recover as much as possible.
How do you discover the ebooks you read?
I've always been into the latest tech. I just read about it and found ebooks the easiest way for me to read, especially now.
What is your writing process?
I like to use a Word/Excel combo to put my ideas down and then bring it all together.
How do you approach cover design?
I just try to think of something that has relevance to the story or how I feel.
What are your five favorite books, and why?
My Teacher is an Alien, My Teacher Fried My Brains, My Teacher Glows in the Dark, My Teacher Flunked the Planet, and Watership Down because they are very imaginative.
