Interview with Jason Cameron

Published 2016-04-28.
What do your fans mean to you?
Everything. My main goal in life (aside from being the best father and husband I can be) is helping as many people as I can in this life.
What are you working on next?
I am currently in treatment for stage III renal cancer. That gets a fellow thinking. What if I'm not here in 6 months, a year, 5 years, etc... to teach my children everything they should know about life? The idea for my next book was born out of that question.

This book, "If I Should Die Before You Wake" will be a culmination of about 70 of the most important life lessons I would want to pass on to my children.
What inspires you to get out of bed each day?
I have a 9 month old. Nothing inspires me more to get out of bed than my wife telling me to get out of bed and deal with baby. Lol!

All kidding aside, with this new Cancer diagnosis, laying in bed isn't an option - I need to spend as much time with my beautiful family as possible because time isn't a luxury I am confident I have anymore.
When you're not writing, how do you spend your time?
Cleaning, cooking, gardening, playing my 7 years old's "sport of the day", helping my 9 month old learn to walk and play patty-cake, and spoiling my wife with massages.
Do you remember the first story you ever wrote?
I do. It was about a semi-truck named Sam and his experiences with bullying - written, illustrated and cardboard covered when I was in Grade 4 (I think my mother still has it).
What is your writing process?
When I get an idea I usually take a composition book and brainstorm everything going on in my brain for the first few pages. Then I organize into chapter and topic within that chapter headings. Everyday I write at least 500 words per topic until I have an extremely rough draft of all of my content. From there it's all tweaking.
Do you remember the first story you ever read, and the impact it had on you?
One Fish, Two Fish, Red Fish, Blue Fish by Dr. Suess.

The first time I realized \i could read by myself was an empowering moment in my life. I had the power to read. From then on - nothing could stop me. The world was my oyster.
How do you approach cover design?
With help. No really, artistically I am beyond repair. I find a few examples of covers I like for whatever topic I am writing about, and tell my guy, Pankaj what I envision for my own. He takes care of the rest.
What do you read for pleasure?
Marketing for Smash-words e-books...or whatever esoteric book happens to jump off my shelf. I enjoy reading about divination, symbology, and Magick. On the flip side I also enjoy reading about urban and/or rural survival strategies.
What is your e-reading device of choice?
My wife's kobo. I really should get one of my own.
