Interview with James Rupe

What is the inspiration behind Beam me up Commander?
Every social and cultural indicator points to a downward trend in the Christian faith. Most people who identify themselves as Christians can’t define their conviction. Beam me up Commander is designed to help those who sincerely want to understand their Christian heritage.
What motivate you to get out of bed each day?
I’m very involved with my family and that would be enough if I had nothing else to offer. However, I have been a student of the Bible for many years and feel responsible to pass that heritage on to the following generations. Combine that with the love of writing and I’m out of bed at six every morning.
What motivated you to become an indie author?
It took me only six months to realize that literary agents are not interested in reading new manuscripts. In today’s digital world the independent writer can get their work published through self-publishing venues like Smashwords and have the satisfaction of knowing someone will read it.
When you're not writing, how do you spend your time?
I am an ex high school football coach so I have always believed being fit was an important part of a quality life style. When I’m not playing golf I bicycle, swim or power walk daily. We travel two or three months a year but my laptop travels with us. Most importantly we still maintain close family ties and spend as much time with our children as schedules will allow.
Do you remember the first story you ever wrote?
My brother was a combat veteran in Vietnam. He won two Bronze Stars for valor during that conflict. He was never the same after returning stateside. I saw through him what war does. My first short story was about a company of grunts making a deadly chopper assault.
What do you read for pleasure?
I am a history buff and enjoy reading history and historical novels of all kinds. I have recently completed a five-volume account of the pacific war compiled by the Navel Officers who were there. Once in a while I like to throw in a suspense thriller.
Describe your desk?
I have a small office in my home where I do most of my writing. My desk is located in the southwest corner of the room and is shaped like the letter L. From the corner it takes up one wall and half of another. A window is positioned along the left side of the desk just above a printer and a small television. My computer monitor is located directly in the corner. On the longer right side of the desk are a table lamp, two phones and various types of file holders. Under the desk every type of electrical connection invented can be found.
