Interview with J. Sterling

Where did you grow up, and how did this influence your writing?
I grew up in Southern California... in literally the same house for almost my whole life (my parents moved when I was 20 and it was the saddest thing ever). I tend to write a lot about the things I know, the things I've experienced, etc... so it definitely influenced my writing. :)
When did you first start writing?
HA! That's funny because looking back I've always been writing in one form or another (multiple journals, online blogs, online message boards), but as far as actually sitting down and writing a book for real? That didn't start until I got fired over 3 years ago.
What's the story behind your latest book?
The story behind The Game Series (The Perfect Game, The Game Changer & The Sweetest Game) stems from part of my college experience. There is so much truth (and a LOT of fiction as well) in those three books.
What motivated you to become an indie author?
Rejections. Literally. I did the "standard" thing and submitted queries to agents and pub houses and just kept getting rejected. I finally decided that I didn't want to wait anymore to put my book out and I looked seriously into Self Publishing. It was the best thing I've ever done. :)
How has Smashwords contributed to your success?
Smashwords is brilliant. I absolutely LOVE the fact that I can come to one place and have my books distributed to so many different retailers. It's made my life EASIER
What is the greatest joy of writing for you?
Being able to tell the stories that my heart wants to tell, as opposed to being bound by other people's wants, desires and pocketbook. The freedom of truly writing for me, being able to reach an audience and connecting with readers.
What do your fans mean to you?
I hate the word fans. Is that mean? lol I LOVE MY READERS!!! I am nothing without my readers!!! I mean, i'm something of course, but it wouldn't amount to much if no one else read my work and told other people to read it. Because of my readers, I make a living off of writing. That sentence alone makes me want to cry. lol
What are you working on next?
I'm currently working on a new set of books that are meant to be light hearted and fun and WILL be available on all platforms. And I always have new and exciting stories churning for life in my head! :)
When you're not writing, how do you spend your time?
BASEBALL. I have a son who does nothing but play baseball year round. When i'm not writing, i'm either at the gym (not that you can tell by looking at me hahaha) or i'm at the baseball field. :)
How do you discover the ebooks you read?
Word of mouth. My author friends. My readers! :)
Do you remember the first story you ever wrote?
Dur. OF COURSE I DO. :) It's part of my heart, soul and guts. <3
