Interview with Julia Herdman

What is the greatest joy of writing for you?
I like to give all my characters real thoughts and feelings - they love, they struggle, they fail and they are heroic. It's a wonderful privilege to be able to spend time creating these imaginary people. Some become my friends, some I fall in love with and some I simply loathe but it's great fun creating them and working out what they will do as the story unfolds.
What do your fans mean to you?
Fans are really important to me. Without fans I wouldn't be able to do this and as I love writing I love my fans and thank them wholeheartedly for their support.
Who are your favorite authors?
When I was a teenager I loved books by Jean Plaidy and Winston Graham. Now that I'm grown up I enjoy a huge range of books. My favourites are of course Jane Austen, Charlotte Bronte, Mrs Gaskill, Chalres Dickens, Winifred Holtby and Boris Pasternak. Modern writers I enjoy include: Robert Harris, Ian Rankin, Val McDermid, Brian Moore, Philippa Gregory, Sarah Dunant, Alan Hollingworth, Robert Godard, Stieg Larsson
What inspires you to get out of bed each day?
My cats, they are always hungry.
