Interview with June Foster

What inspires you to get out of bed each day?
The minute my eyes pop open in the morning, I thank God for another day on this earth. Then I think about going upstairs and working on the stories that He puts in my heart. Writing is a passion for me. The desire to pen my stories boots me out of the bed every morning.
When you're not writing, how do you spend your time?
I love to read my Bible, attend church, and cook delicious meals for my husband. I miss my old pastimes, scrap booking and card making, which occupied my time before I started writing. These days I find the need to exercise even more than before since I sit for long periods of time in front of the computer.
How do you discover the ebooks you read?
I download eBooks that my fellow writers have published. I want to read at least one title from all the authors in my two publishing companies - Desert Breeze and WhiteFire.
What is your writing process?
After I have a story in my mind, I get to know my characters through interviews and personality quizzes. Sometimes I'll write out their back-story so I know why they behave and think as they do. Research is important - understanding the setting - where the story takes place. I discover the physical environment of the area, types of industries, kinds of people, traditions, and facts that I think I'll need. Then I write a chapter by chapter synopsis of the story. After I've done that, the story is ready to be written. I write a rough draft of the entire story. Later I fill in with character actions, emotional reactions, internal thoughts. Then comes the editing process which takes the hard work of critique partners, self-editing, and editing at the publishing level.
What is your e-reading device of choice?
I started out with the very first Kindle. I suppose it's a dinosaur now. My device just allows me to read and that's it. I don't need the other bells and whistles.
When did you first start writing?
I wasn't interested in writing as a child. During my college and career days, I only wrote reports, articles, and college assignments. I never even considered writing fiction. After retiring from teaching, I discovered a story in my head. I could see the characters and the setting - which was unusual for me. I happened to tell my daughter the story, and she suggested I write it. That was the spark I needed. I knew then, even at an older age, that I had to write the stories brewing in my head.
What's the story behind your latest book?
I belong to a wonderful critique group with four other ladies. We got our heads together and decided to each write a retelling of a fairy tale in the genre we each write. For example, I write contemporary romance. I chose Little Red Riding Hood and wrote a modern day retelling of the tale. Thus Red and the Wolf was born. Then we decided to place the stories in a series called Fairwilde Reflections. Each of our tales have or will soon be published through self-publishing.
What is the greatest joy of writing for you?
I love to write about Christian characters who encounter difficulties like anyone else in the world. I get so excited when at the end of the story, my character conquers his/her struggle through God's power and His Word.
What do your fans mean to you?
Fans mean everything. If I didn't know that my books mattered to someone, what would be the point in writing.
What are you working on next?
I'm working on a trilogy called The Almond Tree Series. It takes place in the almond growing country of Northern California.
Who are your favorite authors?
I love the Old and New Testament writers of the Bible. But in today's world, I love Jerry Jenkins, Mildred Colvin, Vanessa Riley, Connie Almony and Gail Pallotta.
