Interview with Mark McKay

What motivated you to become an indie author?
I simply wanted to write in the first instance. When it came to publishing, being an Indie and using the ebook format seemed a natural choice.
How has Smashwords contributed to your success?
It's a little early to say - ask me again in a year from now!
What is the greatest joy of writing for you?
I think it's just the pleasure of the creative process - thinking of where your story's going next and how to make it real for the reader.
What do your fans mean to you?
Fans encourage me to do better, and I hope they're fans because they've enjoyed the book. If that's the case, I'm delighted.
What are you working on next?
Still thinking about what to do next.
Who are your favorite authors?
Difficult question. I like Hemingway, Le Carre, Donna Tarrt. I don't really have 'favourites', you can find good writing in the most unexpected places.
What inspires you to get out of bed each day?
I'm inspired by the prospect of doing today better than yesterday - always a challenge ...
When you're not writing, how do you spend your time?
I play guitar, read a lot. Like to travel when I can. I am quite good at amusing myself actually.
How do you discover the ebooks you read?
I'll read a review somewhere and that sparks my interest. Have just joined Goodreads, so I expect I'll have more recommendations than I can keep up with soon.
Do you remember the first story you ever wrote?
The first story was so long ago. I remember determining to write something about space travel when I was around 7 years old. Inspired by Patrick Moore, who wrote fiction in that genre. It's so long ago now I can't remember the title of the book that got me going. Didn't finish it either ..
What is your writing process?
I have a general idea of the end of the story, and then I work towards it. Things change on the way of course. I try and develop the characters in advance, so I have some idea of their backgrounds and an image of them in my head. Then I try and articulate that further.
