Interview with Jennifer Gulbrandsen

When did you first start writing?
Writing was one of the first things I knew I was good at. I always had journals and loved writing stories. I really took an interest in writing in Jr. High when my 7th grade English teacher raved about a horror story I had written. It was the first time I had ever heard the word, 'Talented' used to describe me.
What's the story behind your latest book?
'The Mom Files' is a collection of essays about my kids and motherhood I have written over the last couple of years, and it's a collection of stories I want to publish annually. 'The Secret Life of Lies' is one of the first novels I wrote. The characters of Ava, Wilcox, Maria, and Justin came to me when I was 17. Through the years, the characters and the story have grown up with me, and I think it's one of the best things I've ever written.
What motivated you to become an indie author?
I love that people can be indie artists in just about any medium now and enjoy success. I think the biggest motivator for me was keeping the control over the creative process and telling the stories I want to tell the way I want to tell them.
How has Smashwords contributed to your success?
Smashwords was the first place I ever published a book. From there, so many avenues opened up for me and allowed me to grow so much in the process.
What is the greatest joy of writing for you?
I love making people laugh with my blog posts and essay work, and I love the passion for storytelling I get to explore through my fiction writing. It allows me to explore all facets of my personality.
What do your fans mean to you?
I love my fans as well as my critics. My fans encourage me, and my critics force me to elevate my game and be that much better of a writer.
What are you working on next?
'Steel Wheels' is my next book I hope to have out in early 2015. It's about figure skating, which is something I did from the age of 7 until my last nationals when I was 21. It also marries all of my journalism work in the land of Reality TV and brings both knowledge bases together for a great story.
Who are your favorite authors?
Joyce Carol Oates is one of my very favorites, as well as Jodi Picoult, Erma Bombeck, BJ Novak, Diana Gabaldon, and so many more I could spend all day naming. I don't think I've ever picked up a book and completely hated it. There's always something good about a book.
What inspires you to get out of bed each day?
Storytelling. Human tradition exists solely on the ability to tell stories. It's something I was gifted with, and I'm excited to tell stories each and every day.
When you're not writing, how do you spend your time?
I'm a competitive distance runner, soccer coach, personal trainer, and I rescue and foster Siberian Huskies. I also co-host a hit comedy radio show called "Wine and Sass!" on WLLS Radio.
How do you discover the ebooks you read?
Word of mouth is everything. If someone posts a link on Facebook or Instagram, I'm all over it. I've read some truly life changing books this way.
