Interview with Claudiu Murgan

What book marketing techniques have been most effective for you?
I've mainly used Facebook and Linked in, but I am in the process of taking advantage of certain writers' groups.
Describe your desk
I like to have a wide desk so my research can spread nicely. I try to keep it organized as much as possible, no more than two piles of books and papers.
What's the story behind your latest book?
It is a very interesting story. By chance, I've received a photograph taken by Gregory Colbert, a known Canadian photographer, showing a kneeled child reading from a book in front of a kneeled elephant. It's a very powerful image that got me thinking. I started creating a story behind that relations. After many pages of writing down ideas, I realized that I can turn it into a book. I always wanted to write about how all souls would, at one point, raise to meet their Creator. It was the perfect opportunity.
What motivated you to become an indie author?
I have talented friends that took a long time to be published in a traditional way. They feared that their value might not be recognized going indie. In my case, the message of the book had to be out as soon as possible, and waiting two or three years to be published it was out of question.
How has Smashwords contributed to your success?
It took me less than four weeks to be published from the moment I decided to go indie. Smashwords was the platform to go as it acts as a hub, saving me time. My goal is to meet the $2,000 threshold to be listed on Amazon as well, and let Smashwords take care of that relationship as well.
What is the greatest joy of writing for you?
For me it's an intellectual exercise that has to be motivated by a strong idea or a message that needs to be spread. I strongly think that the "revival" of my inspiration was not a coincidence. I was meant to write "The Decadence of Our Souls". Why? Because 30 years ago, when I was a teenager, I wrote a novella that had the same title. I completely forgot about it and only recently my parents found the notepad in their attic. It fit in so naturally.
What do your fans mean to you?
I don't know if I have fans yet. I'm the new kid on the block trying to promote a message more than anything else. I hope my ideas generate fans. I, as a person, I am not that important, but ideas could last longer than our physical form. To anyone that liked the book, all I can say is, 'Try to find your own <state of bliss> and your interior happiness will follow.'
What are you working on next?
I'll be starting soon the research for another novel, this time on an element that our own survival is based on: water. I hope to find an interesting message as well.
Who are your favorite authors?
Wow, way too many, but in no specific order: Tad Williams, Rob Sawyer, Guy Gavriel Kay, William Gibson, Neal Stephenson
What inspires you to get out of bed each day?
To do my exercises and meditation. Life is much better and sparkly if you start with a period of internal silence.
When you're not writing, how do you spend your time?
Reading, reading, reading and spending time with my family
