Interview with Steven Andrews

Published 2014-07-03.
What's the story behind your latest book?
As a person who practices Zen meditation and who writes poetry in the haiku genre, I've come to understand the link between the meditation and the poetry. The haiku leads to the meditation and the meditation leads to the haiku. They are one and the same.
What motivated you to become an indie author?
I feel that traditional publishers have placed rigorous limitations on authors because the publishers have found that a particular formula for style, genre, book length, etc. makes them money. Authors who fall outside of the criteria of that formula simply won't be published even though they are wonderful writers.
What is the greatest joy of writing for you?
The creation of something (book, story, poem) from nothing.
What are you working on next?
A novella.
Who are your favorite authors?
Walt Whitman, Charlotte Bronte, William Faulkner, William Carlos Williams, classical haiku genre poets
Describe your desk
An artist's table with a notebook computer on it. Surrounded by shelves of books, papers and folders. Two windows that overlook a Wisconsin farm.
Where did you grow up, and how did this influence your writing?
On a farm in Southern Wisconsin and, although I have lived all over North America, I gravitate back to rural Wisconsin. Its naturalness and simplicity influence both my poetry and my other writing.
When did you first start writing?
Wrote a short story in elementary school.
