Interview with Karen Delchamps

What are your five favorite books, and why?
Hmmm...Non-fictions would have to be The ten Commandments by Emmet Fox, Creative Mind by Ernest Holmes, and of course The King James Version of The Bible. Each one impacts my thoughts and behavioral processes daily. I've managed to highlight and write in them almost to the point of obsession for the knowledge and wisdom they exude.
My two favorite novels are Great Expectations by Dickens and The Notebook by Nicholas Sparks. Great Expectations, from the time I was twelve, is like the comfort of an old friend. I relate to the uncertainty and mysteries of unveiling perceptions of personalities within the confines of a young mind. Plus, it's just one of those crazy-kooky types of reads. Not a fan of romance novels, Sparks just has a quintessential talent for expunging raw emotion from his audience. Albeit pregnant and hormonal, I cried relentlessly for two solid hours almost twenty years ago nearing the conclusion of The Notebook!
What is your e-reading device of choice?
I like my iPad because the PDF Notes app allows me to highlight with my fingers and input notes and underline; which is essential with inspirational books and non-fiction. For novels, the Nook and Kindle are gentle on the eyes and seem to have such a cozy feel.
What book marketing techniques have been most effective for you?
Social media and blogging as well as paid advertising is great, but when I got back to basics and realized virtually every book I've ever read in my adult life was through the suggestion of another person; I implemented the premise of "getting myself out there", and that is when I truly saw an enormous difference in sales.
If I could give one piece of advice to a struggling writer, it would be to treat each person as if they may be your only fan. Make each one a fan and the snowball will start building.
Describe your desk
My lap. I have a beautiful writing desk but my ADD prevents me from sitting at it! Therefore, I move about the house but my favorite spot; big red chair with my computer on my lap.
Where did you grow up, and how did this influence your writing?
I grew up in Southern Alabama. Every aspect of my surroundings from childhood to now has influenced my writing style and content. From my Southern upbringing to this Midwest culture and every person and event that my life has incurred is relevant to who I am and therefore what I represent as a non-fiction writer.
Being a Southern Belle in all probability gives me the "laid back" and simplistic demeanor of my writing style that I think is more relatable. I could never attempt the sophistication and worldliness of Mr. Emmet Fox or Dr. Holmes; they are far more travelled and versed universally. But I am comfortable with who I am and Whose I am; and I do believe that is all that matters.
When did you first start writing?
I've always written but never had the attention capacity to complete a large work until about five years ago. I actually penned a trilogy of novels that I hope to publish after I've released my next book. Dramatically ironic is that I had no idea that the fiction I was writing would be a direct correlation to the scriptural books I've published thus far.
What's the story behind your latest book?
It is the huge revelation of the mystical prophesies of scripture. It gives the keys to life that I uncovered through the Bible, other books and authors, as well as experimentally the trial and error of my personal journey.
I have lived a privileged life in its entirety until recently and am now comfortable admitting that I took every aspect of it for granted; I just always believed that things would always work in my favor as they always had.
A man that I met in New York suggested a book I should read, just a random event, and I purchased it and read it immediately. This one book set me into a tailspin of more questions and a thirst for the true essential meaning of faith and life.
Existentially, I began living for the answers to scripture and everything relative to what life on Earth holds for me. Through a series of unfortunate events, I went through the largest trials of my life. I found myself divorced, jobless, homeless, and penniless within a very short time.
The only resource I had was God. I decided that a job, a person, a bank account, a house, or any material item was not my source; He was my source.
Reading Fox and Holmes gave me insight to solutions but there were elements missing to their conclusions. Through trial and error, I began implementing what I discerned God asked of me.
My life was restored. This book is about how I did it; and how anyone can receive His Power of health, happiness and ultimate success.
How has Smashwords contributed to your success?
I am new to Smashwords but I can tell you that Smashwords has educated me greatly. Their services are futuristic and an incredible source! I am so happy for the affiliation.
If you intend to ever publish with them, stay the course and follow every step; you will be ecstatic you did.
What is the greatest joy of writing for you?
It's almost inexplicable. The feeling I receive from someone I have subtly inspired or was moved by something I created through the written word is euphoric.
I used to think it made me feel relevant but now I believe it satisfies my souls existence through helping; if only in a small way.
What do your fans mean to you?
My fans are my recognition of my boss telling me I did a great job. Writers are self-employed, my fans make me feel that my work and my work effort are not in vain and that what I am doing matters.
I just love them so much and want their every day to be joyful and fulfilling.
