Interview with Karen Raines

When did you first start writing?
I've enjoyed writing for as long as i can remember. As a teen it became more of the angsty poetry variety but its always been a passion of mine.
What's the story behind your latest book?
I've just finished off a new book called 'Dork to Dirty' and it's about the office nerd that may well be moonlighting as a male stripper! It was an absolute 'write it as i go along book' because it was started during National Novel Writing Month last year - my first ever one! I had no plan, no idea where it was going - and I loved it.
What motivated you to become an indie author?
I think now, there are so many opportunities for people to self publish that it isn't quite as daunting as it used to be. Some of my favourite authors are doing it themselves, and doing very well at it. I guess I just realised that if I was ever going to get the courage to put my work out there, now is the time.
How has Smashwords contributed to your success?
It's early days, I have only just submitted my first book to Smashwords but I have heard some fantastic success stories so watch this space.
What is the greatest joy of writing for you?
The way my characters develop. I sometimes find myself with a dopey grin on my face while i'm fleshing out a scene, almost as if I had forgotten that I wrote it myself.
What do your fans mean to you?
Absolutely everything! I really do appreciate all the feedback and comments I receive and will keep trying to do them justice.
What are you working on next?
The second book in my Spiralling Ink Series is taking up all my time right now. Strength: Claire's Spiral is hopefully going to be finished in time for the summer!
Who are your favorite authors?
So many! R.L. Mathewson, Mimi Jean Pamfiloff and Abbi Glines are my top three... i think!?!?
What inspires you to get out of bed each day?
I would love to say the joy of writing - but truthfully it's the kids dragging my butt out of bed to make them a morning cuppa... sigh!
When you're not writing, how do you spend your time?
My free time consists of reading, reading and perhaps a little bit of reading - I may have a reading disorder!
How do you discover the ebooks you read?
I like to stalk retailers and pick up the ones with barely any reviews. I always do my best to rate and review, especially on Goodreads. I'm also a major sucker for MC romances!
