Interview with Karen Smythe

What's the story behind your latest book?
In my 10 years of training young athletes, I found that many young athletes weren't able to continue with their sport without the help of sponsorship. I wanted to help young athletes stay in their sport and obtain their sporting goals.
What motivated you to become an indie author?
Writing an eBook was a cost effective way to get the message out to young athletes or their parents. It is an easy way to compile really helpful information at a reason price. I love helping young athletes and this was a great way to do that outside of my training and coaching.
What is the greatest joy of writing for you?
I didn't enjoy writing my first book in 2005 surprisingly. I have really enjoyed writing this book because I know that the message is going to help a lot of young athletes. I have other titles in mind now based on my experience training young athletes.
What is your writing process?
I usually get a skeleton (outline) of the book together and then start working on each chapter until I've completed the chapters. I then write the conclusion and then the introduction. I usually work in short stints, trying to complete one chapter in a sitting. I love writing to relaxing music.
How do you approach cover design?
I have a few thoughts about what I would like to see on my covers and then I contact my graphic designer. I have a lot of faith in him and he usually comes back with some great ideas. We then discuss and revise until I'm happy with the final product.
What are you working on next?
My next title for young athletes will be about social media. Many young athletes don't know how to manage their social media professionally.
What inspires you to get out of bed each day?
The fact that I can assist someone through my training, coaching or writing.
How has Smashwords contributed to your success?
Smashwords has helped me to get the eBook to my audience. I would like to thanks them for making it easier for young athletes too.
When you're not writing, how do you spend your time?
I love travelling and socialising with friends.
How do you discover the ebooks you read?
I usually look for interesting titles each week and they are based on my personal development or if I'm looking for fiction, based around my interests in reading.
Where did you grow up, and how did this influence your writing?
I grew up in a small country town and sport was part of our culture in the community. I loved being involved in a few different sports. This meant I played sport and was usually involved in the committee too. My knowledge of the topic comes from being involved in sport and training young athletes in many different sports.
