Interview with Claire DeLaney

What are you working on next?
I'm intrigued by the sexual adventures of Squire Tom Jones, Henry Fielding's character, played by Albert Finney in the 1963 comedy adventure. The discrepancy between prudish morality and sexual abandon seems ripe for exploration. In the classical novel, the women seem to have a submissive role, but adding creative promiscuity to the classical role elevates women's need and desires to a new level. This approach seems like a good fit with my publication on fantasies The Sexual Fantasies of a Good Girl
Who are your favorite authors?
The Anne Rice series on Beauty and her challenges (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Sleeping_Beauty_Trilogy) came well before the current Fifty Shades trend and was more deeply written. Of course the Pauline Réage series started me down the road of fantasy and living them out. Fiction short stories by John Dufresne are an excellent model for condensing complex emotions into memorable writing.
What inspires you to get out of bed each day?
Unfortunately, I'm a morning day dreamer. Over coffee, propped in the bed, I make a list for the day. After the coffee, I'm awake enough to tackle some form of writing or editing, and the day flows from there. The fantasies that make up my writing come unexpectedly, roll on like a snowball down a hill, and mature enough after several appearances to find their way into words.
When you're not writing, how do you spend your time?
I have an excellent day job. Writing is and will likely continue to be a luxury. I wish there were writer's groups that could give honest feedback on sexually-explicit fiction, but that's a few steps away I suspect. Because of my persona as a good girl, I can't trust many friends to critique my developing stories.
How do you discover the ebooks you read?
I wander bookstores, looking for local books, books that contain vibrant characters muddling through life. Most are available as ebooks. Those that are not, and are great literature, sexual or not, are springboards for ideas. The fantasy aspect of my work comes from appreciating the characters and their personalities and waiting for a fantasy to develop.
Do you remember the first story you ever wrote?
Yes. It never made it to publication. The story was in response to an assignment in school to write anything about vegetables. The story was about my mother serving Brussels Sprouts for the first time at dinner.
What is your writing process?
If the words are flowing, I write for an hour after morning coffee, always in the same location, often with a candle burning. I write until the words stop flowing. If the words are not flowing, I read good literature for thirty minutes and retry. If that doesn't work, I go back to bed with a vibrator before work.
How do you approach cover design?
If I had a cover artist, I'd ask them to come up with 3 ideas after reading the book. Since I don't, I try to find images that convey the ideas and emotions in one image. I love the cover for The Sexual Fantasies of a Good Girl. With the right makeup and hair it could be me.

Come along with me as I share my fantasies. They're pretty graphic, but not raunchy and some are romance, some a stretch. I've lived some of them and may get to the rest sooner than I think. I'm always looking for a challenge.
