Interview with K. R. Bailey

Published 2017-07-04.
Do you remember the first story you ever read, and the impact it had on you?
The first book I remember was "The Flame and The Flower" by Rosemary Rogers. That book had a big impact on me. From then on, I was hooked on romantic historical novels.
How do you approach cover design?
I usually work with a fantastic cover artist - even though I admit some of my short stories I've designed the covers myself. I start by reviewing pictures. I usually have an idea what I want for a cover, and then when I meet with my cover artist, she always has super ideas to enhance anything I have in mind. It's such a fun process to see what she designs for me.
What do you read for pleasure?
I love romantic suspense and western historical novels, but lately I enjoy reading stories about ghost towns and paranormal. There's not much I don't enjoy.
What is your e-reading device of choice?
I love e-readers. My husband gave me my first e-reader, a Sony, and I loved it but I've found a lot of my writer friends didn't publish in any format but kindle so last year I upgraded to a Kindle Paperwhite and it is great. I love that the screen is backlit because most of my reading is at night before I go to bed. I love how easy it is to download a new book.
Describe your desk
As my husband says - a mess! I laugh because I know exactly where everything is.
When did you first start writing?
I actually started my first book over 30 years ago, but even before that, I took a notebook with me everywhere I went. It wasn't unusual to find me taking notes about how I felt, what I saw, describing people and places. I was devastated when my car was broken into and I lost that first notebook, but I still pull out old notebooks full of notes from places I've visited. It comes in handy to help me remember how I felt when I traveled to a different part of the world.
What motivated you to become an indie author?
My writer friends. I was published with two small on-line publishers and my writer friends kept saying take the chance and publish your own, you'll have more hands on for any changes, cover design, etc. My first indie-published book was "A Tug At My Heart" and it was a good experience. I decided to tackle my next book, "A Perfect Catch" by myself and now I don't even consider wanting to go through a publisher. It takes a little more work on my part, but it is worth it.
