Interview with Kathy Sloan

When did you first start writing?
I guess I've always been a writer but my writing was terrible and I was never encouraged to write. In fact, I had several teachers criticize my writing (rather than help me become better at it) and that caused my self-confidence to go down the tubes. Then one day, a friend jokingly suggested that I should write a book about my time as a daycare provider. Some of the stories that I had were hilarious. So one day, while the daycare children were sleeping, I opened my computer and began to write some things down. But, it was all so personal and seemed a violation of the relationships I had with the families I worked for. So, I changed the names and manipulated circumstances and suddenly a completely fictional story emerged and before I knew it, I had an 80,000-word novel. I've been writing ever since!
What's the story behind your latest book?
One day, while doing daycare and the kids were playing, I wrote a story in my notebook about a woman who runs away. She day dreams about what life would have been like if she'd chosen a different path. I scribbled about 800 words in that notebook that day and didn't look at the story again until about 5/6 years later when I was thinking about participating in NaNoWriMo. I flipped through the pages of my notebook and saw this story about Sarah and thought, this is really good. So, I used that seed and wrote 50,000 words in the month of November 2011. IN LAGUNA is that story. I chose Laguna Beach as the setting for my book because I had visited Laguna once and fell in love with it. It has stayed in my heart ever since and I wish I could get back there.
What motivated you to become an indie author?
I was tired of rejection. I sent out IN LAGUNA to so many agents but was told the story wasn't marketable. I believed they were wrong. I believed that the story would resonate with women. Much to my surprise, many men have read IN LAGUNA and all have loved it. The book has received wonderful reviews and I feel that is a success. Aside from the rejection, I needed to be finished with IN LAGUNA. I was working it to death. Constantly changing things around and editing it. I knew that in order to move on to something new that IN LAGUNA need to be out in the world. I needed to let it go. Now that I've self-published, I wonder why it took me so damn long to do it.
