Interview with Kathy Sue Widdows Adams

Where did you grow up, and how did this influence your writing?
I grew up in Illinois. My parents were from the south. I grew up listening to lots of music and I have always loved the lyrical way that songs were written . I liked writing songs when I was younger they were all kind of quirky though and never did anything with them. There wasn't much to do growing up and music was my get away.
When did you first start writing?
I first started writing when I was around 14 I think that is when I got my first guitar with S & H Greenstamps. It was called a 5 star. The strings were so high it was quite a challenge. I never took lessons learned to play by ear. Had a book with cords in it and never learned to play very well but I liked to play and started to write songs.
What motivated you to become an indie author?
I was kind of in a state of depression, a lot had been going wrong in my life and I was having trouble dealing with things. I was as talking to a lady who is an eft practitioner about what was happening in my life and she asked me what did I do to get out of these depressions and I said I write poems. She asked had I ever thought about publishing them. At the time I had started a file of my poems and stories about why I had written them but never thought to publish them. Was more for my family should anything happen to me. I thought it would be a nice remembrance. She had said why don't you do an ebook anyone can do one. Of course I had no idea how to even begin so I just started investigating the process and here I am.
What's the story behind your latest book?
I have been writing poems for a long time for different reasons for family and friends and just because I had a thought in my head. hehe My friends and family kept telling me I should publish them. I used to post sillyness on facebook and I had quite a little following of family and friends that would read my posts everyday. People kept telling me if I ever published them to let them know as they would love to read them. But I didn't want to just publish a book of poems as there was so much thought into why each poem was written so I started telling the stories behind each poem and that is how it came to be the Whispers in my Mind.
How has Smashwords contributed to your success?
Yes I think so. Just putting it out there for people to read even if so far it has only been my family and friends. It has opened up a new world for me. I am working on another book which I hope someday will come to life and is totally different from the Whispers in my Mind.
What is the greatest joy of writing for you?
My greatest Joy in writing is watching the expressions of joy or sadness on someones face when they read a poem I have written for them. Even when it is a sad poem of the loss of a loved one I put my heart into each piece and I can see that they see that when they read it.
What do your fans mean to you?
Well, I only have 12 fans so far hehe and they are my family and friends and as you will see in this book I think that they mean the world to me.
What are you working on next?
I am working on a suspense thriller novel but have a long way to go. Have no idea what I am doing I'm just going for it.
Who are your favorite authors?
Of course my all time favorite is Diana Gabaldon. I very much have enjoyed the Harry Potter series by JK Rowlings. But I have spent many a day with a good Dean Koontz book.
What inspires you to get out of bed each day?
My family and friends is what I get up for everyday of my life. I would be truly lost without them as I am sure everyone would feel that way about the people they love.
When you're not writing, how do you spend your time?
A lot of my time is spent with friends at a local diner that stays open 24 hrs a day. We spend a lot of time there just gabbing. I even have a poem in my book about that diner. Other than that I pretty much stay to myself and if I am not writing I have a good tv show on or a good book. I am in the process of listening to the Outlander Series by Diana Gabaldon for the umteenth time. I am hooked on that book and the reader Davina Porter. She is an awesome reader. Then of course I have my 2 Children and 9 Grandchildren that keep me busy also written about in my book.
