Interview with Katie Ashley

What do you read for pleasure?
I love to read just about anything--romance, young adult, PNR. I do have a special love of nonfiction about the royals, the Holocaust and WWII, and political figures.
What is your e-reading device of choice?
I love my Kindle Paperwhite. I do read on my phone a lot as well just out of convenience.
Describe your desk
I have a beautiful mahogany desk and hutch upstairs in my office. The desk and hutch have pictures of family on them, trinkets from my travels, some of my Funko pop collection, and a menagerie of office supplies. Although it makes a picture-perfect writing space, I usually write on my laptop downstairs or at Starbucks, lol.
Where did you grow up, and how did this influence your writing?
I grew up in the northern suburbs of Atlanta. The love of Southern culture certainly influenced my writing. All of my novels take place in the south, and most contain characters who are archetypes of the culture. I love writing about small towns too.
What is the greatest joy of writing for you?
Having people read and appreciate my stories. It's a truly humbling experience to have someone fall in love with your characters as much as you have.
What do your fans mean to you?
They mean everything. They are such an incredible blessing. How else can you describe those who allow you to live your dreams.
Who are your favorite authors?
Harper Lee, Fannie Flagg, Shakespeare, Lewis Grizzard, JR Ward, JK Rowling, and Janet Evanovich.
What inspires you to get out of bed each day?
My daughter. She is the long-awaited answer to years of prayers and dreams for a child.
When did you first start writing?
I "wrote" my first story at four. It was mainly pictures I drew and then told the story. It was about three cats creatively named Mat, Dat, and Lat who went on a camping trip with their parents. I continued writing throughout my childhood and early teen years. I didn't start striving for publication until I was almost thirty.
What motivated you to become an indie author?
I'd had two agents and two almost book deals in the Young Adult world. When I put out The Proposition, my first adult romance, it was in an odd way like the hail mary of my writing career. I had no idea it would pay off or turn into the amazing success it did.
When you're not writing, how do you spend your time?
I'm a pretty low-key person. While I love traveling around the country and world meeting readers, I am like Dorothy because there is no place like home. I love reading a compelling book, watching a good movie, or spending time with family and friends.
Do you remember the first story you ever wrote?
Yes, I do. While it was mostly pictures because I "wrote" it at four, it was about three cats who went on a camping trip with their parents. The cats were creatively named Mat, Dat, and Lat!
What is your writing process?
I like to call it creative chaos. I'm very much a panster, rather than an outliner. I've been writing full-time for the last six years. Often, I write in pieces like a patchwork quilt. Then I work to piece the patches together to make a beautiful finished product.
