Interview with TC Gates

Published 2013-09-01.
What's the story behind your latest book?
A teenage girl's father goes missing in Romania. Her father's friend invites her to his home to join him in an investigation into her father's whereabouts. There, she learns that her father was part of a secret group of monster hunters called Ordo Draconum and finds a secret world she never knew existed. She attempts to find her father, find her place in this new world, and discover her growing feelings for a stranger who claims to be her enemy.
What is the greatest joy of writing for you?
Feedback from the fans. Monetary gain is so unimportant in comparison to knowing that people greatly enjoy my stories. I eagerly anticipate fans doing their own fan fictions and fan art for my book.
What do your fans mean to you?
They mean the world to me. I appreciate and encourage any responses to my book, even critical ones. My dream is to have a panel with my fans and allow them to ask any questions they could about my books.
What are you working on next?
I'm in the midst of several more sequels to the Ordo Draconum series. I've fallen in love with the characters and can't imagine not writing them.
Who are your favorite authors?
Michael Crichton, Stephen King, Dean Koontz, S.D. Perry, Mick Foley, Chris Jericho
When you're not writing, how do you spend your time?
Working, playing video games, and hanging out with friends. I don't do much, so my days are pretty uneventful.
Describe your desk
Wooden and old. Items include: cell phone, wallet, Nintendo 3DS, PlayStation Portable, Taco Bell bag, car keys and mail.
When did you first start writing?
As early as high school, but I was never good at it. I randomly started writing in 2013 and was blown away by how good it was.
What motivated you to become an indie author?
I have a ton of ideas and no real way to pull them from my head and share them. Can't draw, sing, write music, or anything creative. Luckily, I'm good enough at writing.
What is your writing process?
I put forth very little pre-planning besides the general outline of the story. I'll sit for hours at a time and just make it up as I go and then clean everything up afterward. It's a bizarre way to write, but it's done well so far.
