Interview with Kaitlyn Hoyt

Why do you write?
Because I have to.

Because I love it.

Because I feel like a part of me is missing when I don't write.

Because it's cathartic.

There are so many reason why I write.
When did you first start writing?
I started writing the summer after I graduated high school. I was eighteen and couldn't find a summer job before I started college, so I decided to write a novel. I didn't want to waste my summer watching TV, so I tried to do something productive. I wrote BlackMoon Beginnings in its entirety in June of 2012 and immediately started working on Scorching Secrets and finished that book the following month.
Where do you get the inspiration for your stories?

I'll be sitting on my bed in my dorm working on a genetics assignment and this character will sit up in the back of my brain and decide that he or she needs my attention at that exact moment. They'll push through all the other crazy thoughts running through my mind and say "Hey, I need you to pay attention to me. I have a story to tell you right now!" Thus, a new novel is created. Inspiration strikes when I least expect it.
When you're not writing, how do you spend your time?
When I'm not I write ALL the time. If I'm not writing, it's either because my classes are getting really busy or there is a new episode of my favorite TV shows on. I'm obsessed with shows like Bones, Castle, Supernatural, Psych, etc. I spend a lot of my free time catching up on my endless TBR list too. That list is never-ending. I finish one book and add ten more.
What is the greatest joy of writing for you?
There are so many joys of writing. I think that one of the greatest joys of writing it the full emotional spectrum I go through when I'm creating something. I laugh. I cry. I hate myself for putting my characters through so much, but then I'm happy with where their story goes. When you're able to create something that puts you, as the writer, through that much, the readers will grasp that. They have an uncanny way of sensing things like that. It's an amazing feeling when you know that a reader fully understands your novel. They read past the black and white words on the page and connected on a deeper level with your work. There's no better feeling.
How do you discover the ebooks you read?
I'm a big supporter of indie authors and I follow a lot of blogs that support indie authors, so I look at their recommendations and favorite books. I'm introduced to a lot of new and upcoming indie authors. Also, I am a free ebook addict. I go on Amazon and download tons of free ebooks all the time. These introduce me to a lot of amazing books and I'm able to connect with new authors via social media sites.
Growing up, what were your favorite books?
Oh, my childhood books.

I had all the Junie B. Jones books. I thought they were the bees knees. Seriously. In elementary school, I got into the Boxcar Children novels. In third grade, my teacher gave me The BFG by Roald Dahl and after that, I decided to read almost all of his children novels. I'm pretty sure I read all of Shel Silverstein's poetry books too. I've always loved books. :)
What do your fans mean to you?
Fans mean everything to me. Everything. They're not just fans. They are the amazing people that took a chance on an unknown writer and spread the word about my books. They are the reason that I push forward. They are the reason that my life has changed for the better. They are the reason why I get to do what I love every day. Everything that has happened has been because of them. There's nothing I can say or do that will ever express how grateful I am to all my readers for picking up my books, but I hope that they know. Because of all they've given me, I hope that I can continue to create works worthy of their amazing support. They deserve that much.
What's one thing you wish that someone would have told you before you started writing?
There's no way to please everyone. It is impossible. There's always going to be someone that absolutely hates your novel. Someone is going to try and tear you down. They are going to try and fill your mind with negative thoughts, but you can't let them affect you.

If you love your story, that's all that matters. Love what you write. If you do that, someone will be able to tell. We all come from different backgrounds and have different experiences and memories. There will be someone that relates to your story. There will one person that sees the beauty in your writing, and in the end, that one person will push all those negative things aside. Knowing that you are able to do something that can impact someone's life makes everything you've been through up to that point worth it. Don't give up! No matter what you go through, don't give up.
