Interview with Ken Lehnig

What inspires you to get out of bed each day?
I started writing in earnest after I had contracted a deadly disease that put me in a wheel chair, in terrible pain and a growing addiction to morphine. During those times of lucidity and very aware of the finite days ahead I began to write in hopes of leaving a legacy for my children. All three of the dark and weird "Jongleur' series are the output of that time (I suppose in some way from the influence of the dragon). When I did not die and recovered, including the ability to walk, I realized how very much writing had redefined me. I wrote the 'Elm's Chronicles' as a cathartic romp through a different world, and for casting out the demons from that dark place I had once been. I'm just finishing another novel, a closer to mainstream thriller. So...what gets me out of bed? The answer is simple for me. I get my stories and ideas when I sleep - and that wakes me up ready to put those stories as best as I am able onto pages. A gift I believe gained in a time of great trial.
When you're not writing, how do you spend your time?
I have been a musician and singer/songwriter for 40 years. My band 'Ken Lehnig and the Burning Sage Band' of nearly two decades just finished a rock album called 'Keep The Sun From Going Down' (Available everywhere) and I'm currently working on an eclectic Americana project 'The American Music Show'. A great deal of time is spent on Dave Dodds and my website , Songwritersmarketplace.com. I interview up and coming singer/songwriters and industry folks and write articles on lyric writing and performing. We pulled it down and are currently building a new and improved site. I'll give a heads up when it's live again.
How do you discover the ebooks you read?
Here!
Do you remember the first story you ever wrote?
Yes - the first story I wrote in the late 70s. I turned into a film script.. 'The Medallion' a paranormal, Sci-fi adventure starting in the US, through Egypt, to elsewhere. I had some success pitching the project - it was budgeted but was never made.
What is your writing process?
Fuss around a bit, have two cups of coffee, beat myself a bit for not writing more, watch the news, get disgusted, the drag myself over to my computer, read what I wrote yesterday, edit a little, type.
What book marketing techniques have been most effective for you?
I'm still learning.
Describe your desk
Organized mayhem.
When did you first start writing?
I was a terrible student. Probably because I was a Navy brat. In my last year of high school I got into some trouble and was about to be expelled. Two teachers stuck up for me, one was the teacher/adviser for the school paper. He made me the editorial editor - I had no lack of opinions in those days - but with no idea as to what I was doing. I learned. And Mrs. Black who taught me to write - one of my short stories was published in a regional publication. Every time I sit down to write I give them a nod of thanks..
What motivated you to become an indie author?
A wall in front of me with 29 rejection letters for my novel and over 50 from short stories. I should say that there are also acceptance letters in a number far less than the rejection letters but of an amount to keep me writing and not running into the street, pulling out what little hair I have left, in frustration. Self-publishing though daunting for the learning curve proved to be a good option - thank you Smashwords.
