Interview with Kenn Brody

What is your e-reading device of choice?
I read on a Kindle Paperwhite or any of several computers.
What book marketing techniques have been most effective for you?
Reading my books at book stores that have shelves of science fiction and good turnover seems to be the best way. Smashwords is the better of several online alternatives, however.
When did you first start writing?
I actually won a poetry contest in High School with a, believe it or not, science poem about the Big Bang. I've written everything from technical articles in physics, articles in Kayaking and Sail, poetry collections, and short story contests. Some of the best stories are those I made up on the spot to entertain my kids on a dull evening.
What's the story behind your latest book?
Amy, a cute California high school girl, goes to a mountaintop with her class because she has a crush on the science teacher. While she is looking through the telescope at the rings of Saturn, the night sky turns pink. The sky is pink everywhere, in every direction, from then on, forever.
It's a signal from a highly advance civilization sweeping the universe by means we don't understand.
Amy calls it, "The Curtain of Heaven".
It changes mankind.
How has Smashwords contributed to your success?
We will wait and see on that one.
Who do you write for?
Ah, the big question. I write for my followers, most of who are withering in a desert of vampires and Star Trek wannabees. I write from a fresher perspective about what it means to be human, the nature of reality and astounding things in science. It has to entertain SF readers, who are tough critics, but if it stops only at the entertainment level, I am not doing my job. My heroes are H.G. Wells, Arthur C. Clarke and Isaac Asimov, who I knew personally. If you don't think about the themes in my books and haven't learn anything new, I have failed.
What is the greatest joy of writing for you?
I really enjoy my stories - the characters come alive, the action is full of twists and surprises, the writing is spare yet descriptive, and the message is deep and full of meaning. It always surprises me that I can do all that.
Who are your favorite SF authors?
Greg Bear, Arthur Clarke, Iain Banks, Kay Kenyon, Larry Niven... It's a long list. I read a lot of real science books and textbooks as well.
When you're not writing, how do you spend your time?
There is a need to offset powerful sitting muscles with equally powerful doing muscles. I kayak, lift weights, bike, sail, play a flute, and do traditional instinctive archery. If I had any more hobbies I would not have time to write.
I spend quality time with my lady, my doggie and my friends. I hardly ever watch TV and I have no idea who won the last football game.
What are you working on next?
Inspired by the Matrix series, I'm writing a real SF book, "Just One Red Light".
Someone has invented a way to PROVE, one way or the other, whether this is a simulation. Hayley Sault, a science reporter, is assigned to interview this fellow and observe his experiment. Hayley is in our world, but her life is very far from boring. She's a rather uninhibited and very discerning person trying to make sense of her experiences.
The experiment works. In a sea of ordinary results, one red light glows. That is proof.
What would YOU do if you KNEW you were a simulation?
You'll never guess what happens. You'll have to read the book.
