Interview with Kerr Cuhulain

What are your five favorite books, and why?
The Book of Five Rings, by Miyamoto Musashi, because that inspired me to study and perfect myself as a warrior. The Art of War by Sun Tzu, because it has so much good advice. Small Gods by Terry Pratchett, an amazing author: This book gave me a whole new perspective on divinity. Night Watch, by Terence Dickinson, because it is a foundation book for astronomers. Bleak House, by Charles Dickens, because of the characters Dickens creates.
What do you read for pleasure?
Fantasy, historical fiction, anything to do with physics and astronomy.
What book marketing techniques have been most effective for you?
Teaching and posting videos.

Where did you grow up, and how did this influence your writing?
I am from North Vancouver, British Columbia, and the access to the natural environment there was a big influence to me as a child.
When did you first start writing?
I first started writing to educate people about my spiritual path when I first went public in the mid 1980s.
What's the story behind your latest book?
My latest book, Stand Like a Tree, published by Dark Moon Press, is about mastering the use of energy.
What motivated you to become an indie author?
I learned about indie publishing at the Surrey International Writer's Conference a few years ago.
How has Smashwords contributed to your success?
It has simplified the process of publishing for me.
What is the greatest joy of writing for you?
Writing is my art. For many in my family its painting, but for me it comes out as words.
What do your fans mean to you?
Meeting the needs of my fans is important to me, because knighthood is about service.
What are you working on next?
I've just written and hosted a BravoFACTUAL documentary, "Starry Nights", and am working on scripts for other documentary projects. I've written two seasons of scripts for the Night Lights astronomy show for Eastlink/Coast Cable, with a third coming up this year. I'm planning to write a book about reconnecting with the natural world.
Who are your favorite authors?
Charles Dickens, Terry Pratchett, and L. E. Modesitt
What inspires you to get out of bed each day?
I've got a to do list and I discipline myself to get it done.
When you're not writing, how do you spend your time?
Teaching, doing outreach and managerial work for the Royal Astronomical Society of Canada (I'm their National Secretary)
Do you remember the first story you ever wrote?
Fionuir's Mural. I never new exactly what was going to happen when I sat down to the keyboard, but then the characters started speaking and my fingers started typing.
What is your writing process?
Get what I'm thinking down and then edit it later. I'm a collage writer. I don't write scenes or chapters in sequence.
Do you remember the first story you ever read, and the impact it had on you?
It was Homer's Odyssey. It got me thinking about divinity and our relationship to it.
How do you approach cover design?
The cover has to introduce the story
What is your e-reading device of choice?

How do you discover the ebooks you read?
Usually conversations with friends.
