Interview with Kim O'Shea

When you're not writing, how do you spend your time?
I am a Paranormal Investigator so I spend as much time as I can investigating or researching the unknown. I have always been fascinated by the supernatural and my goal is to find out as much as I can.
How do you discover the ebooks you read?
Usually if I am interested in a topic I will read articles on it and follow any recommended reading lists. I also like to browse through a specific genre section -whatever genre I happen to feel like at the time - and pick a few unknown authors to see what they are doing. I always leave reviews because I think it is important that authors know how readers feel about their books.
Do you remember the first story you ever wrote?
When I was about eight I was supposed to write a short piece about coffee for school. I got totally carried away and researched the subject fully. The teacher was quite shocked as I had even illustrated it and managed to get hold of some real coffee beans (quite rare in Ireland in the 1970s!) I begged her to let us do tea the following week. I don't think my classmates were very happy!
What is your writing process?
For fiction I just pick up a pen and notepad and if I am lucky the writing flows. For non fiction I like to think about as many aspects of the subject as I can. I often use word clouds to help with this. I then research the subject as thoroughly as I can. I also like to ask friends and family a few questions to see their take on it. Finally, l fire up the laptop and off I go.
Do you remember the first story you ever read, and the impact it had on you?
I started reading long before I went to school but the story that had the biggest impact was one in a school book when I was about nine. It was called "The Iron Man" -(I think!) and was about an iron monster terrorising a family. I loved it!
Another story that has always stuck with me is the story of Pompeii. I read about this when I was about seven or eight and have remained fascinated by it ever since.
What do you read for pleasure?
My favourite genres are horror and science fiction. For pleasure, I would have to say I read anything by Stephen King. I read and love many genres including many of the classics right through to modern day chick lit. I simply love reading.
When did you first start writing?
I started when I was at school. I always loved it when we were given an essay to write. I would have done one every week but at seven or eight it wasn't part of the curriculum I suppose. I didn't think of it as writing - I just loved the way the pen raced across the page and the crinkly feel of the paper when both sides were covered with ink.
What's the story behind your latest book?
The story is about a girl growing up in rural Ireland in the 1940s. Her parents treated her the same as the other children even though she had a handicap. Perhaps this is the reason her life turned out as it did. Perhaps she could have been spared some of the heartache and shame. She watched as her brothers and sisters left home and finally it was her turn but her simple pleasures in life were all swept away by a cruel act.
The story will continue in the next volume about how she deals with the consequences and learns to overcome the shame and humiliation.
What motivated you to become an indie author?
The first few short books I wrote were sitting around on my hard drive doing nothing. I decided that as I loved ebooks myself, I would have a go at publishing mine. I discovered I loved the challenge of learning how to edit, format, publish and market the books.
Perhaps being an indie author isn't for everyone but for me it's definitely the way to go.
How has Smashwords contributed to your success?
Smashwords has taught me a lot about all aspects of getting the book ready for publishing. The help and free info is a fantastic resource. Once published, Smashwords made it easy to distribute my books all over the world. The marketing support is invaluable and the various reports let me see where more efforts are needed to promote and sell my work.
What is the greatest joy of writing for you?
The greatest joy for me is sitting outside watching the pen fly over the paper wondering what my characters are going to do next.
