Interview with Bran Burnette

Who are your favorite authors?
Marion Zimmer Bradley is the one that changed my life. Before reading her stories, I didn't think there was any serious female writers. The world of Darkover was like a home to me.
What inspires you to get out of bed each day?
Usually cats clawing my face. It's a good alarm clock.
Do you remember the first story you ever wrote?
When I was a kid every time I had to write something I based it around these two detectives 'Leo and Debbie.' They had some weird, if short, adventures.
What is your writing process?
Blaring music, no lights... basically sensory deprivation.
Do you remember the first story you ever read, and the impact it had on you?
I can't remember the first, books have always been a huge part of my life, maybe Blue Bug? I remember him getting a kite pretty well...
What are your five favorite books, and why?
1) Watership Down. I read it at least once a year. I love the characters, they really speak to me. 2) Lost Souls. Poppy Z Brite is a wonderful writer that really grabbed the sense of emo/grudge I was surrounded by growing up. The book is sorta funny, in a sick way. 3) Anything Darkover. That series will always be part of my live, those characters live in my head now. 4) Luck in the Shadows. Any of the series. I love how it deals with LGBT lives, without giving up the story plot. 5) Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy. That was the novel that started my fanfictions, which sorta lead to all this.
What do you read for pleasure?
Depends on my mood. Generally Sci-fi/fantasy. Sometimes a good LGBT story. If my brain feels like mush, cheesy romance can be a winner too. I'm not really picky.
Describe your desk
I actually don't have a desk. I work from my bed, use a tv tray to set my laptop on. My house is super small, so there isn't an area for writing (no sofa, no chairs... just a bed. The struggle is real!). It does offer the luxury of an altar view, which is a real inspiration to me
Where did you grow up, and how did this influence your writing?
Small town East Texas. It's was hard trying to imagine a world outside it. I'm not sure I could write without using the word 'ya'll'.
What motivated you to become an indie author?
Lost my job working at a black light mini-golf course. After 10 years there, I was like 'now what?'
How has Smashwords contributed to your success?
It gave me a portal to see other writers living their dreams. That's like a lifeline.
What is the greatest joy of writing for you?
Seeing where the story will go. I love when the characters write themselves.
What do your fans mean to you?
I have several from when I wrote fanfiction. Every time I get a letter or a new review, I swear a golden beam of light comes down from the sky. Knowing people still want to read, that's amazing!
