Interview with Kerri Hummingbird Sami

How did your early childhood influence your writing?
Throughout my life I have been inclined to spend time alone in the creative process, enjoying my imagination and creating the world I wanted to live in. Nature versus nurture being the eternal debate, I believe that the challenges I experienced very early in my life led me to seek solace in quiet playtime that helped me 'work out' the questions these early experiences raised in my young mind. In adulthood, I was literally shoved by Spirit into circumstances that demanded I heal inner childhood wounds. With a lifetime of turning to imagination and the inner world of processing, of course I wrote about my healing process in my memoir, Awakening To Me.
When did you first start writing?
I wrote my first book in elementary school about the adventures of a mouse family, and sold several copies (to family members!). In college I studied literary journalism and have always loved the art of writing about true experiences in a fictional and imaginative way. John Jerome, author of "Stone Work: Reflections on Serious Play and Other Aspects of Country Life" was one of my professors.
What's the story behind your latest book?
Throughout my life I have had interpersonal challenges in intimate relationships, and when I was nearing my 40s, after several mental illness diagnoses during my lifetime, I hit the wall. I walked out of my 20 year marriage and sought alternative healing modalities. Awakening To Me describes my healing journey through shamanic practices, energy medicine, and mentoring from amazing visionaries in practical spirituality. After spending most of my lifetime in psychotherapy, I discovered shamanic healing and experienced such a radical shift that I decided to document the journey of healing my mind with the intent to create a map for others to follow. The resulting memoir garnered a Best in Category award from The Indie Spiritual Book Awards in 2014, and I continue to promote it so that it reaches the hands of people who are currently suffering with mental illness. My mission to inspire people to pursue their own journey of healing, and to create the dream of life they always hoped was possible.
What motivated you to become an indie author?
Spirit has made it very clear that my journey of healing is essential to share. So rather than wait for someone to take notice of me (which could take a very long time indeed!), I decided to publish the book myself and get out there with it without delay.
What is the greatest joy of writing for you?
I love sharing what I have learned, and I delight when I hear that my words have inspired others. It is very simple: I like to figure out how to make life better, and then I like to share it to help people.
What are you working on next?
My next book is From We To Me, and it compiles all of my wisdom (hard-earned!) for making the transition from the relationship model of co-dependency to the new and evolving relationship model of independent interconnectedness. I am planning to release this book on October 27, 2015 with the intent to help any person recovering from a divorce or wanting to step into a new way of being 'Me'.
What inspires you to get out of bed each day?
I have finally found my purpose in helping others with the power of energy medicine, and the experience for me of being in a session is truly fascinating. My imagination is very activated by my work, and I love helping people, so it is easy to get out of bed for the first time in my life.
When you're not writing, how do you spend your time?
Primarily I coach individuals in how to transform their lives, and I serve as an energy medicine practitioner. I have been certified in energy medicine by The Four Winds Light Body School and in spiritual coaching by The Toltec Center of Creative Intent and HeatherAsh Amara.
What is your writing process?
I figure out the spiritual lessons of my life experiences by writing. Often I begin a book or blog by posting thoughts on Facebook, and then move into a blog article for more substantial topics that I want to explore in greater depth. When writing Awakening To Me, I wrote as I experienced my journey of healing and so the writing was instrumental to understanding the spiritual lessons that propelled me into greater healing. It is possible to say that writing Awakening To Me was a substantial aspect of my healing process.
How do you approach cover design?
I drew the artwork for Awakening To Me and then integrated it into Photoshop art that I created. I am an artist, and I love to create, and I wanted to be involved in every aspect of the creative process.
What do you read for pleasure?
I love to learn, so I am constantly reading spiritual literature by prominent thought leaders, or helpful guides for things I want to learn such as marketing or social media or publishing books. At other times in my life I loved reading complex thriller or mystery novels, and at some point I am sure I will pick up another enjoyable read!
