Interview with Mitch Howell

Who are your favorite authors?
A few of my favorites would be Brandon Sanderson, Steven King and Terry Goodkind.
What inspires you to get out of bed each day?
My wife and kids .
When you're not writing, how do you spend your time?
I work a full time job to support my family and even then I think about writing. I find time to read and write whenever I can.
How do you discover the ebooks you read?
I follow the blogs of my favorite writers and read on my nook.
Do you remember the first story you ever wrote?
I was in the eighth grade and the assignment was to write a scary story. My story was put in the local paper and I was hooked from there.
What is your writing process?
I take notes constantly. Whenever an idea comes into my head I write it before I forget it. Then I take time to so and put the notes together until a story forms.
Do you remember the first story you ever read, and the impact it had on you?
The first story I remember reading was Tom Sawyer. The story seemed to come to life and I was amazed at how it was possible for words to translate into pictures in my head.
How do you approach cover design?
I am a less is more guy when it comes to cover design. I don't want a crowded cover that tells the whole story before it is even opened. When I read I like to create my own pictures for the story. That is how I would like readers to enjoy my work.
What do you read for pleasure?
I read fiction for pleasure since reality isn't always so fantastic.
What is your e-reading device of choice?
Any ereader that can put the pages in front of my face will do.
Describe your desk
My desk is any surface that works. I write everywhere so one desk just will not do.
Where did you grow up, and how did this influence your writing?
I grew up poor in the Mississippi Delta. It was not a glamorous childhood but I had great friends. Two brothers next door were my best friends. Together we had lots of adventures. There is no doubt that that influence reflects in my work.
