Interview with Kristin Spencer

What are your five favorite books, and why?
I absolutely love all kinds of books, so this is a very difficult question for me to attempt to answer, but I will try. My favorite book of all time is "Pride and Prejudice" by Jane Austen. It is smart and the characters are imperfect, which I love. Number two would have to be "The Great Divorce" by C.S. Lewis which is I feel like is a book where Religious Fiction and Science Fiction meet and converge in such an interesting way. Third on my list has to be "How I Know God Answers Prayer" by Rosalind Goforth. I read that book when I am in serious need of encouragement. My addiction to Science Fiction compels me to pick "Brave New World" by Aldous Huxley as my fourth favorite, who was so far ahead of his time. I also love "Absolute Surrender" by Andrew Murray, this is a classic, but a new favorite for me personally. My favorite living book (and the only one of its kind) is the Bible.
What do you read for pleasure?
Mostly Science Fiction and Contemporary Christian Fiction.
What is your e-reading device of choice?
I love the original Kindle with the keyboard, but unfortunately mine finally stopped working, mainly because my three year old accidentally jumped on it. I am seriously considering getting a Kindle Paperwhite.
What book marketing techniques have been most effective for you?
Giveaway blogs always increase the number of downloads, but usually if your book is featured. I haven't had any luck with advertising on the sidebars of these types of sites. Of course, word of mouth is great as well. I am thankful to all my friends that posted about my book on their social media.
Describe your desk
I don't really have one. I have a laptop and a couch. Next to the couch my husband has built me a little cabinet that I can set my coffee on, but that also opens up to hold all my writing notebooks and resources.
Where did you grow up, and how did this influence your writing?
I grew up in Torrance, California. I think that your environment growing up always influences your writing, whether you admit it or not. For me, it has heavily influenced who I am, especially growing up in such a multi-cultral place. In my next series, I have set it in an imaginary Southern California town that very much mirrors Torrance.
When did you first start writing?
When I was in Junior High I started journaling, and then in University I started writing short stories. It wasn't until I was in my 20's that I started writing regularly, and that was through my travel blog. Writing everyday for three years was great practice, and I wrote my first non-fiction novel in about 6 months when I was 30.
What's the story behind your latest book?
It is based on my childhood in Southern California, but with updated twists that have to do with technology and its influence on culture. I am writing it as fiction, however, because there are a lot of things that don't resemble my own life at all.
What motivated you to become an indie author?
Honestly, the low cost. I have always wanted to write but I don't have the financial resources to submit my manuscripts or pitches to anyone.
What is the greatest joy of writing for you?
It's a giant creative puzzle, and that's what I love. I also make quilts for the same reason. I can't imagine existing without the ability to be creative.
How has Smashwords contributed to your success?
I'm new to Smashwords, but I am already very thankful that I was able to find an avenue to offer my first novel online for free. Thanks Smashwords!
