Interview with Kurt Petrey

What is your writing process?
I'm a balanced hybrid between outlining and free-writing. I will go back and forth throughout the entire process of the project. I do perform a great deal of up front research and planning in the world building stage.
Do you remember the first story you ever read, and the impact it had on you?
Ender's Game by Orson Scott Card was the first book I read. It changed my life and created a desire within me to read like no book before it. I've reread it a number of times and feel that it has driven me to want to be a better writer.
How do you approach cover design?
I like the idea of taking the most powerful scene in the story and depicting it to the best of my ability. I will consider creating a cover that defines the tone if the specific scene is not practical. There's always firms like that help that process out a lot.
What are your five favorite books, and why?
1. The name of the wind by Patrick Rothfuss is by far my favorite fantasy novel due to its unique blend of folktale and current story telling methods. He is a master in the art of writing.

2. The foundation series by Isaac Asimov. This series laid the foundation for many writers and film makers to come.

3. Redshirt by John Scalzi - Because he's the man and that story rocks. I love taking an already established philosophy and telling a story that exposes a completely new perspective as in Redshirts. We get to see the story from the people that typically get killed in every episode.

4. Monster Hunter International by Larry Correia - He invents a wonderful cast of characters and takes them places you wouldn't expect.

5. Flatland by Edwin A. Abbott - Because we all need a book that blows our mind from time to time.
What do you read for pleasure?
I read a lot of fantasy and science fiction. I do dabble in non-fiction from time to time.
What is your e-reading device of choice?
I have an Ipad but I use Kindle Reader on it so take that whichever direction you want.
What book marketing techniques have been most effective for you?
None. I'm a new author with one story to my name. I'm not gonna worry about marketing anytime soon.
Describe your desk
slightly cluttered with a great view.
Where did you grow up, and how did this influence your writing?
I grew up in a remote location with little to no technology where people would hunt, fish or talk about hunting and fishing. This did not influence my writing that much as I like to write science fiction mostly.
When did you first start writing?
I have played with stories in my head or by jotting down notes here and there for most of my life but I only seriously started writing three years ago in 2012 when I realized no one was going to write my stories for me.
What's the story behind your latest book?
Since it is my first story I wanted to come up with an idea that was easily the worst idea I could come up with that was still interesting. I figured through some people in the ground where they are trapped from getting out.
