Interview with Vladislav Kravchenko

What is your e-reading device of choice?
My preffered e-reading device is my large smartphone. I use Samsung Note series for a while and find them perfect. To date I use Note II. This is not the latest but it is still actual - large screen, strong battery and it has very good camera.

I usually don't read books I listen to them. But if I need to read it I use my Note to do that.
What book marketing techniques have been most effective for you?
Internet sales is the best one. Of cource many people still read paper books but more and more readers move to electronic format.
Describe your desk
I have a very large oak desk with two phones, a large monitor, a paper tray and a can with pens.
Where did you grow up, and how did this influence your writing?
I grew up in Leningrad. That is a World War Two hero-city located at a shore of the Baltic sea. The city is the second largest city of Russia and former capital of the country. Its center is very beautiful and packed with tourists from all over the world. But that was years ago so my impressions of the city are very weak. I take a lot from travels around the world and also Russia. I like travel and prefer to notice something picular from the new places I visit.
When did you first start writing?
I started my writing as a pro in the middle of 90th. I wrote several articles for computer magazines.
What's the story behind your latest book?
Imagination that is my inspiration. My latest book "В день, когда он перестал существовать" is about a modern apocalypse. We live in an extremely technologycal world. And even a small problem can ruin everything. Most of the people over the wolrd haven't even thought about a possibility of such a doom day. But I think that if you know about something then you can react in the right way.
What motivated you to become an indie author?
I would like to express my thoughts. I wanted to tell to other people a story of my mind. I like my heroes in my books and I'm their master. I can rule them and put them into different conditions. Usually I don't have any super evil or extra good. Everyone is an ordinary person. And of cource I wanted to show off in front of my friends and relatives :)
How has Smashwords contributed to your success?
I'm a new user at Shashwords and I hope that we will be able to cooperate together for mutual success.
What is the greatest joy of writing for you?
The greatest joy is thinking over a new book. When I plan the conditions, environment, actions and events. That is the most attractive part of the work. I fell that I'm a Creator of a new world.
What do your fans mean to you?
They are my power for new books.
What are you working on next?
I have two good stories in my mind. One is about a fight against a corruption in Russia. And the second one is about a man, a woman and the coldiest point at the Earth. I can't choose one of them but definitly will write both. Check my page for the new books!
Who are your favorite authors?
I like to read (not actually read but listen to audio books). My favorite authors are Viktor Pelevin, Ivan Efremov, Robert Heinlein, Harry Harryson and many many others.
What inspires you to get out of bed each day?
My dogs inspire me every single morning.
When you're not writing, how do you spend your time?
I'm a busnessmen so I work hard. I can say that I write at my past time and this is not my current main accupation.
What is your writing process?
The process is very complicated. At first I have to think the main points of my future books. I need to discover the idea of my book. Then I need to think the characters of the book. I also have to check small details of the places, machinery and other important details. After that I prepare a plan of the book. Then I write the meat. This is one of the heaviest part of the work. After that I do a proof reading. I read my book printed, fix mistakes and rewirte ugly parts. After that final proof reading and prepareation for distirbution. That is.
