Interview with Veronica Smith

Published 2015-09-05.
What is the greatest joy of writing for you?
I love to have something I wrote get stuck in someone's head. It means I wrote something memorable.
What are you working on next?
I've started a zombie book but haven't come up with a title yet. It will be a completely different take on zombies than anyone else.
Who are your favorite authors?
I don't really have a favorite. I read mostly indie authors and love them all. Chris Philbrook got me hooked on zombie books with his Adrian's Undead Diary online diary.
When you're not writing, how do you spend your time?
Working. After that there isn't much time. I love to read but don't get to read as much as I used to.
How do you discover the ebooks you read?
I'm was an old-school Sony eReader. I though that was the coolest thing ever. I was so reluctant to upgrade to a Kindle when Sony stopped making them but I don't regret it for a second. In fact, I've upgraded my upgrade!
What is your writing process?
I have a long commute to and from work and sometimes I'll just get an idea in my head on the way home. I'll go over it several times so I don't forget important parts, then type out the main parts when I get home. I've gotten to carrying a voice recorder now so I just record my thoughts. Then I'll take however long to fine tune it.
Do you remember the first story you ever read, and the impact it had on you?
Island of the Blue Dolphins when I was a girl. That one has always stuck with me. The survival of the girl was such an inspiration. Since then I've always thought of post apocalypse as my favorite.
How do you approach cover design?
I'm not a very good artist. I know what I want and will actually draw it out with stick figures. Then sent that to the person who's doing my cover along with the part of the book I want to the cover scene.
What do you read for pleasure?
Post apocalypse. Any kind pretty much. It doesn't matter if its plague, zombie, weather related, or just world destruction. I've always loved the survival aspects.
What is your e-reading device of choice?
Kindle. I have the Touchscreen but I still have my old keypad style too.
When did you first start writing?
Since I was little. I used to read Nancy Drew and even back then I was making my own teenage detective books. I did that several times and still have them somewhere around the house.
