Interview with Kelly Woods

What is the greatest joy of writing for you?
Writing has been a passion of mine for a long time. I've always loved the escape that a good book can provide. When I was young I read a lot of books, and I still love reading. I've also written a bit of poetry. Again, I feel that writing is how I can be creative as I can't draw or do 'arty' things...give me a pen and paper though and, with the right inspiration I'm there!
Who are your favorite authors?
I really enjoy Cathy Kelly, Jodi Picoult and Sylvia Day. But my all time idol for novels has to be Paullina Simons. The way she can encapsulate a character's life and leave you hanging and wondering years later about them I think is the mark of a brilliant author. I am eagerly awaiting the release of the 5th book in the 'Crossfire' series by Slyvia Day though! I also discovered John Green when I read The Fault in Our Stars, and I am now reading Paper Planes and hope to get on to Finding Alaska very soon.
What are you working on next?
After having successfully written and published a romance novella and a romance novel I am going to be working on a mystery suspense piece. I am still working on a sequel to All Bets Off, however I want to do it justice. Writing has had to go on the back burner in recent months however I hope to get back into it very soon!
Do you remember the first story you ever wrote?
My mother and I sat down when I was about four or five and we wrote a story together about Penny Possum. I don't even remember the details now though. My first serious foray into writing was when I was doing my Bachelor of Arts and I was undertaking a Writing Fiction class. I wrote two pieces, and one of those has been in the back of my mind for further development one day. Stay tuned for 'Alone' one day in the distant future!
What are your five favorite books, and why?
Can I list a trilogy as three of the 5? The Bronze Horseman Trilogy by Paullina Simons. One word - Spectacular. The books were very long, but the stories were just incredible. The way she was able to get you to hear, smell, taste things in your mind.
Next would be 'My Sister's Keeper' by Jodi Picoult - I actually finished reading it on my honeymoon...not a good move! I think I cried and felt deflated for a month!
Lastly, one of my all time favourites was a book I read in seventh grade called 'Letters from the Inside' by John Marsden. I recently re-read it after twenty years and an adult perspective is so much different than when you were 12. There were many things which I never picked up on when I read it the first time, and I did the second. Such a great Aussie author.

Limiting myself to just five is hard because there are so many wonderful books by so many wonderful authors, but they are certainly books that are forever etched in my mind.
What is your e-reading device of choice?
I started with a Kindle, but the n I got an iPad. I tend to alternate between an iPhone, iPad and Kindle. Since they all synch together I can read for hours on end and I always have my next book handy! Although I must admit, my last 6 months of reading has been real books with real pages thanks to having to read so much on screen with my studies!
What's the story behind your latest book?
My most recently published book is about a young woman who has just come from bad break up and is heading abroad for a trip of self discovery. On the way she meets a man, who isn't really who he seems. It follows their path of connection, courtship and crisis.
What motivated you to become an indie author?
I think being an indie author gives you greater flexibility and you aren't confined to a particular style, editor etc. I have read many books by authors I would never have otherwise heard of, and I think in a creative arts community it's important to be able to freely express yourself. We can't all be JK Rowling or Stephen King, but we can all share a story, a vision, a passion.
Describe your desk
I have a desk??? It must be hidden under a pile of paperwork and education readings!
When you're not writing, how do you spend your time?
If I'm not writing I am working at my 'real job', studying or helping my husband run his own business...but studying takes a lot of time and effort and I think I have written 30,000 words of assignments this year alone!
How do you discover the ebooks you read?
Amazon is one of my best sources, as well as iBooks from Apple. And of course when I discovered Smashwords, another new world opened up to me! Facebook also keeps me posted with books from some of my favourite authors as well. Friends recommendations always help, and I love being connected with Good Reads!
