Interview with Marilyn Lamb

Published 2018-05-30.
What is the greatest joy of writing for you?
For me, the greatest joy of writing is taking a hypothetical situation, creating characters to experience it, progressing them along the plot line, and putting obstacles in their way until the "happy ending," whatever that may be. It's a wonderful way to escape the humdrum and find new adventures wherever my mind takes me.
What are you working on next?
At the moment I have several projects on the go, most of them in the revision stage. One is a sequel to Blood Covenant, called Dark Temptation, and a time travel romance (On Ravyn's Wing) that I'm currently sending out for consideration. It too may end up a self-published work, likely under a pseudonym, since it contains a more sensual plot line. I haven't decided on a pen name yet. Another romance is also in revisions, and I have others either incomplete or in formation stage. Always busy, it seems.
Who are your favorite authors?
Gosh, there are so many. I love historical romances, and certain paranormals, vampires being my favorites--naturally--along with Frank Peretti, who does what some have referred to as Christian horror. Sherrilyn Kenyon, Lynsay Sands, Kelley Armstrong, Beverly Lewis's Amish novels. Yes, I have very eclectic tastes. My extensive collection includes stories about cats--I adore the furry little beasts.
What are your five favorite books, and why?
Dracula, naturally. This Present Darkness by Frank Peretti. Dragonwyck by Anya Seton. The entire Outlander series by Diana Gabaldon (which encompasses more than five). I tend toward series, my favorites being by Beverly Lewis, Kelley Armstrong, Kerrelyn Sparks, Sherrilyn Kenyon, and so many more. As you can see, my tastes are eclectic, yet they cover the types of works I enjoy writing myself.
How do you discover the ebooks you read?
I discover a lot of the ebooks I read through BookBub. Once I find an author I like, I'll search out other books by that author to add to my collection.
Do you remember the first story you ever wrote?
I do. It was a class assignment, a short story in Grade 6 about a young skater who injured her ankle and had to be rescued. My teacher was so impressed with the story that she kept it. Wish I had a copy to keep for myself.
What is your writing process?
My first ideas are often triggered by characters and situations, then I proceed to the "what if" stage to create plot and conflict. Music also plays are large role in my writing process.
How do you approach cover design?
For Blood Covenant, I did my own design. Simple, but I think it conveys the general theme. I call it my "midnight inspiration" because I had been struggling to find just the right concept, and it came to me after I'd gone to bed. I immediately got up and spent a couple of hours getting the general concept into my computer design program. Only then could I go back to sleep.
What do you read for pleasure?
Anything Regency, Victorian, pirates, time travel and vampires/paranormal. Again, an eclectic selection.
What is your e-reading device of choice?
Kindle.
Describe your desk
Organized chaos. Maybe chaos in motion. Not sure. They say a cluttered desk is the sign of a busy mind. If so, mine is going non-stop.
When did you first start writing?
I first started seriously writing in my early teens. That was the birth of the first version of Blood Covenant. I still have the handwritten manuscript.
What motivated you to become an indie author?
When I originally marketed Blood Covenant, it went unaccepted, whether due to the length or cross genre, not generally done at that time. However, I did receive some very positive and encouraging feedback from editors, and even my agent agreed that I might be better to self publish this book.
When you're not writing, how do you spend your time?
Since I don't work outside the home, I'm pretty much a "free agent" as far activities besides writing go. I do enjoy watching TV, and can often be found with a knitting or crocheting project on the go. I belong to a critique circle, so I will spend time offering suggestions to my critique partners on their writing. I enjoy walks, both as an escape and as exercise, pacing myself to music.
