Interview with Silena Buckelew

Published 2016-01-21.
Where did you grow up, and how did this influence your writing?
I grew up in a small town; I was kinda a homebody but that just meant that I had plenty of time to create my own fantastical worlds inside my head. It was these fantasy worlds; these dreams and imitative things I did as a child that created my first original stories.

My Kindergarten, too, it kinda influenced some of it in a way; the way we played, the worlds we created inspired the worlds that I created and dreamed about and later grew into the worlds I wrote about.
When did you first start writing?
When I was about six years old I started writing. It was really bad back then. I still have some of them. A lot of them were about cats during that time, but some of them started being about that one major project that I just haven't really been able to sit down and work with. Also during that time, my brother had a tape recorder and I used to record the same story over and over again. That story has since been written time and time again has become the story "Caged Bird".
What is the greatest joy of writing for you?
I love creating fantastical worlds, strange characters, and crafting their stories even if a lot of mine tend to turn out dark.
What motivated you to become an indie author?
I've always loved writing; not much more to say other than that.
Describe your desk
My desk usually stays kinda clear at least on the top. I have shelves on my desk, though, that holds binders of some of my drawings and some outlining for my original works. I also have my drawing pencils, an A3 scanner, and Blue Yeti microphone.

Considering how messy my room can get, my desk stays pretty clean; the drawers too.

I have a dream desk, though. I imagine I'd have that one in a horrendous state because I'd have so much room on it.
Who are your favorite authors?
I really love LJ Smith, the person most people know for the Vampire Diaries. I really don't care for that, though. I like her Night World stories and most of all the Forbidden Game.

On the other universe, I also consider manga and comics int he same category just as books. Printed media to read and enjoy the stories. Just because they have pictures does not mean the stories cannot hold me and make me feel.

Kaori Yuki is my favorite mangaka. She does loads of dark-fantasy style things and her art style is gorgeous.
What's the story behind your latest book?
I write too sporadically to say that I have a "latest" book. Currently, however, I'm writing a script for a video game concept. I just pulled it out of the many random ideas in my head based on the many random ideas that are there. There really is no basis; I just have a huge imagination.
What do your fans mean to you?
I love them. If they love what I write then I love that they love it. I love what I write so I love that they love it. It's great to all love the same thing right?
When you're not writing, how do you spend your time?
I play video games and I watch a lot of Youtube. I used to watch a lot of TV but there just isn't much on anymore so Youtube has become my new TV. Video games are just something that has always been around. In the 1990's though, I discovered JRPG's (Japanese Role-playing Games) and the fact that games can be playable movies (in a sense) so I kinda got addicted.
How has Smashwords contributed to your success?
I appreciate having a simple, efficient, and easily accessible platform to publish and control my original works. I may not be very big or famous in any way but I'm enjoying it no matter what.
