Interview with Larisa Anderson

What is your writing process?
I write the most at my day job (dont tell my boss) being stuck at a desk all day really helps me focus.
Do you remember the first story you ever read, and the impact it had on you?
Sadly i cant remember the title but they were little pocket sized, but quite thick, pirate books. They had chapters and pictures and i just loved them! If anyone knows what im talking about i would love to get myself a set! Beside that it would have to be the Rowan of Rin series, our librarian read them to us.
How do you approach cover design?
My first two covers were through a cover artist because i wasnt brave enough to have a go. Now though I am lucky enough that i was quite good at digital photography in college so i have the skills to make my own covers. I always try and make them something i would like to pick up and most importantly they have to look professional!
What is your e-reading device of choice?
I have a kindle but rarley remember to charge it so i read the most on my iphone.
What book marketing techniques have been most effective for you?
Twitter is a great marketing platform. If you have interesting content, not just ads for your work, then you will grow your followers and reach a wider audience. I have also found that guest blogs are great for finding new readers. And of course the best marketing is to have a new book out so i always try and publish a new one every few months.
Describe your desk
At home i use my laptop on the coffee table. At work i have things strewn all over the place, empty lunch boxes, books, magazines. Im pritty messy.
When did you first start writing?
I started my first book on a car trip when i was 15. That story was finished when i was 21 and will never see the light of day lol.
What's the story behind your latest book?
The Watering Hole, started as an entry to an outback Australia anthology. It didnt make it but i recieved great feedback so i selfpubed it. The story is about two tour guides who get stuck in a rain storm. Very steamy i assure you.
What motivated you to become an indie author?
I had a lot of rejection letters at the start. The prevailing theme however was that they loved my stories but they were too short for publication. A friend suggested self publishing them as a way to get a bit of experience in the industry. After publishing a few i got hooked. Now i self publish and am also published through established epublishers. I think that both have great benefits and there is a place for both in the industry.
How has Smashwords contributed to your success?
It gives me an outlet for stories that arent main stream enough for publishers. It also means that i can control the pricing and there is no better way to gain readers than offering up a few freebies.
What is the greatest joy of writing for you?
Seeing the finished product. I love a good type set manuscript and cover art.
What do your fans mean to you?
I wouldnt be able to keep writing with out them and frankly i write to please so to have fans means the world!
What are you working on next?
I am working on a few series for my publishers at the moment so nothing for Smashwords until the end of the year. Hopefully when i get a few deadlines out of the way i can start working on my own stories.
