Interview with Larry Yoakum III

Published 2015-06-28.
Where did you grow up, and how did this influence your writing?
I grew up in Valley Center, Kansas. All of my writing takes place in the same "universe" and Valley Center in my stories is a sort of nexus where all sorts of bizarre things happen. I don't focus everything in that town, but the stuff that happens there, look out. I suppose being from small town America, I saw a lot of it as boring, and I wanted to spice things up with monsters, ghosts, aliens, and the like.
When did you first start writing?
I wrote blurbs in high school. Mainly from being bored. I didn't really start writing my short stories until I was in the Air Force.
What's the story behind your latest book?
My latest novella, The Targothian: Book I, is a story about a regular guy who is taken to another time and place and discovers he has abilities that he never knew he could do, and soon finds out that the reason he was brought there was less than noble. He befriends a powerful warlord, and that friendship soon comes to a head. He discovers who he is inside and his destiny for being there. It is the first book of a nine part series.
What motivated you to become an indie author?
I had a bad experience with a publisher, and my books were trapped in contract. Now that they're freed up, I am doing things my way. If I have to promote my own work, then I am going to have full control over the what and the why on everything.
How has Smashwords contributed to your success?
I haven't used their services yet, but I am hoping that my work gets out there and eventually finds its way to the right person who contacts me saying "We want to turn your story into a movie." My ultimate desire is to quit my job and write full time.
What is the greatest joy of writing for you?
I have a story to tell. Heck, I have lots of stories to tell. I have to clear room out of my brain for more. It gets cluttered in there at times and writing helps to organize the mental storage shelves.
What do your fans mean to you?
My fans share my vision for original and bizarre stories, whether they be science fiction, horror, fantasy, or just plain kooky. I write for myself, what I want. Any fans out there who enjoy what I have to say, I am truly blessed and I hope I can continue to amuse and entertain them.
What are you working on next?
The second book of the Targothian series, as well as a dark fantasy story called Redcap.
Who are your favorite authors?
Of course, I love Stephen King. He's the master. I also am a fan of H.P. Lovecraft. I am also a fan of the Archangel books of Sharon Shinn. I am a big fan of a local poet in the Dallas area, Amber Jerome~Norrgard.
What inspires you to get out of bed each day?
Depends. On a weekday, the desire to get to work on time so as to not be fired. After all, I still need my day job. On a weekend, it is the hopes of bacon and coffee and to get started on some sort of writing project, be it a new story or formatting and editing an existing one.
When you're not writing, how do you spend your time?
I like to read, of course. I love the Simpsons. I play World of Warcraft. As the founding member of a veterans brotherhood (The Knights of Targoth Order of Veterans) I like to hang out with my brothers and sisters in arms. Also, I am an ordained minister and if anyone needs me to officiate, if I am available, I'll do it for them.
How do you discover the ebooks you read?
Usually through word of mouth. Or if a friend of mine has a new book, I'll usually download it so I can read it at my leisure.
Do you remember the first story you ever wrote?
I don't recall which of my current stories were first, but I do remember when I was in the 8th grade, our English teacher had us write a sequel for The Time Machine as a project. I wish I had kept it. I remember I ended it with the main character materializing in a rock and dying, forever trapped in stone. I know I couldn't publish it, but I wish I would have kept it for sentimental value. I don't think the teacher ever gave them back to us.
What is your writing process?
Don't really have one. If I am writing a short story, I usually just start working and let the story develop naturally. On my books like The Targothian, I have them outlined out chapter by chapter and I go from there.
Do you remember the first story you ever read, and the impact it had on you?
No, I've drank a lot since then.
How do you approach cover design?
as creatively as possible without spending money. I'm an indie author. I don't want to spend tons of money on a cover.
What are your five favorite books, and why?
One of my favorites is I am Dracula by C. Dean Andersson. (yes that is with two 's' in that name). Just a cool take on the legend of Dracula. I also love all the books of Sharon Shinn's Archangel series. They mix religious overtones into science fiction. My favorite Stephen King book is It. Who doesn't get freaked by clowns? Another lesser known book I like is by Eoin Colfer. It is called The Wish List. A sad, yet sweet story about a girl who dies and both heaven and hell want her and she has to help an old man with his bucket list in order for her to make it to heaven.
What do you read for pleasure?
big fan of fantasy and horror. I would love to write something that is scary and can actually scare someone.
What is your e-reading device of choice?
I have a Kindle Fire.
What book marketing techniques have been most effective for you?
So far, none. I've advertised my blog on Facebook and Twitter and even on LinkedIn. I've had a few small book signings. Doing what I can, when I can.
Describe your desk
a small desk from Office Depot. It serves its purpose. I try to keep it organized, but sometimes it just doesn't keep.
Star Wars or Star Trek?
I'm enlightened. I like both...though Star Wars is without question the best.
