Interview with Lasheda Harper

Where did you grow up, and how did this influence your writing?
I was born in Milwaukee, WI a city of some sort. When I was 9 my family and I moved to Ahwatukee, a triangular shaped sub-urban village of the City of Phoenix, Arizona.
One of the things that was most apparent to me regarding the difference between locations were the cultures. Milwaukee has an expansive Black community and culture embedded with other minority groups such as Germans, Irish, Native Americans, Puerto Ricans, Asians, and Africans.
In my writing, I like to incorporate the city life of Blacks that I grew up around, along with the White and Mexican cultural contrast of Arizona that I became accustomed too.
When did you first start writing?
Apart from the essays I were required to write in school, I began writing my own material at 15. By that time, I had matured enough to know what my passions were and what I wanted to do to make a living,
What's the story behind your latest book?
My latest book that I have published is called STEAKHOUSE: A Collection of Selected Short Stories and Essays. Like the title suggest, STEAKHOUSE is a compilation of various stories and experiences. I believe that as an artist, rather you're a writer, singer, or painter, your skill and ability should grow as you, the individual grow in life. So as I got older I wrote my perspective on life. All of the writings within STEAKHOUSE, has a personal touch because I wrote about things that went on in my life and societal issues that I wanted to address.
What motivated you to become an indie author?
As an indie author, I have more control over my material. I don't have a deadline to reach and neither do I have to split my money too many ways.
How has Smashwords contributed to your success?
Smashwords has given me a platform to publish my writing to reach a wider audience. I can find my book in the Apple Store, at Barnes and Noble, Kobo, and other major e-book libraries.
What is the greatest joy of writing for you?
The greatest joy of writing for me is that it gives me the opportunity to talk to myself about things that I view as important. I can put my thoughts on paper and sort them out more clearly. I feel accomplished and original because I know that there is not another writer out there writing what I'm writing.
What do your fans mean to you?
I appreciate the fact that people have taken an interested in what I have to say. People are busy and I know not too many people have the time in their day to read. So the fact that literally hundreds of people have downloaded my book because they want to take the time out of their busy schedule to read my book is humbling, because lets be serious, how many people actually read today?
What are you working on next?
Right now I am working on my next book called Shambled Ruins. It's a book depicting life during the Great Depression through the eyes of a 15 year old girl living in Oklahoma in 1929. It's a historical/realistic YA fiction book. While the writing in itself is complete, as of now I'm proof-reading, editing, researching, and putting together the cover art.
Who are your favorite authors?
In a nutshell: John Steinbeck, George Orwell, Harper Lee, F. Scott Fitzgerald, and Sharon Draper.
What inspires you to get out of bed each day?
Having a purpose in life inspires me to get out of bed everyday, putting my fellow man first and before me in the sense of being able to provide a service to others inspires me to get out of bed, and having the gift of life inspires me even more so.
When you're not writing, how do you spend your time?
When I'm not writing I'm either cooking, reading, watching a documentary, traveling, living life, and helping others have hope for the future.
