Interview with Derek Pulse

Published 2016-01-23.
Describe your desk
My desk is extremely neat; it's my mind that is a jumbled mess. Seriously, though, I find that I can write anywhere, as long as I have a flat surface on which to rest my laptop or tablet. Sometimes I think my desk and office exist these days more as a cultural museum than as a practical workspace.
Where did you grow up, and how did this influence your writing?
My family moved around a lot when I was growing up. This had the effect on me of not counting on long-lasting friendships, or as I hit the "horny years", long-lasting romances. When I started writing erotica, this "brief encounter" attitude, even if it was something that I had outgrown in real life, very much remained in my subconscious. It is no wonder, then, that so many of my lead characters are simply looking for a good time (even if the romantic in me sometimes forces them to settle down by the end of the story).
When did you first start writing?
I was writing bad sci-fi when I was ten years old, bad horror when I was fifteen, and bad erotica when I was in college... but to horny college students, there really is no such thing as "bad erotica", so that work was greeted with great enthusiasm by most of the dorm mates who read it (I printed out copies for them, because you do NOT want back those pages after an excitable 18-year-old guy is through with them).

I started writing stuff that was of a quality that I was actually proud of, oh, by the time I graduated college. And no, I'm not going to say exactly how far back that was.
What's the story behind your latest book?
Oh, so MANY stories behind this one... but it all started with all of the news stories of washed-up former child actors, usually in some kind of drug-fueled legal trouble. One night I thought to myself, "What if a genuinely nice former teen star, not really a bad boy, but someone who just never had a real shot at long-term fame, suddenly had a gigantic amount of money waved in his face? Would he really be able to turn it down, no matter WHAT he was asked to do to earn that cash? And in the end, might he not actually begin to enjoy some of the somewhat perverted hoops that a billionaire voyeur might ask him to jump through?"

To say any more would reveal too much about future books in the ROLE OF A LIFETIME series... let's just say that Donnie DeGeorgio is going to find out that he's into some stuff that he would have never even considered trying out on his own.
What motivated you to become an indie author?
Well, I've always been an author, and there's always been this gigantic wall in front of me. The "indie" route was a natural choice. We now live in an era in which new, exciting opportunities are now available for artists, if they only dare to reach for them.
How has Smashwords contributed to your success?
If you're reading this, then you already know the answer. Accessibility and visibility. And this is provided with no expense to the author, and a pretty fair division of profit.
What is the greatest joy of writing for you?
It's good to just get the words out of my head and onto the page. When someone actually READS those words, the joy increases tenfold.
What do your fans mean to you?
The world.
What are you working on next?
The next several books in the Role of a Lifetime series, plus some other projects that I'm currently keeping under my hat. Readers will see more release of Role of... first, because I want them to get in far enough to see where the whole saga is progressing. After that, though, its volumes may alternate with releases from one of my other little (naughty) notions.
