Interview with Laura S. Kearney

Published 2015-04-03.
What are you working on next?
I am working on the third book of the Lorinathas Adventures series and then I will finish out the last three books for the Stolen Heritage series. After that who knows? I have so many plans I will be busy writing for a long time.
What do your fans mean to you?
My fans are the ultimate focus of my writing. They are my happy meter and keep me on the right track. I write with the mind of a reader, telling stories that would have enjoyed picking off a shelf, and as long as the fans are happy I must be doing something right.
Who are your favorite authors?
My favorite authors are J. R. R. Tolkien, Robert Jordan for "The Wheel of Time" series, and more recently Brandon Sanderson. I also really like John Flannigan and Rick Riordan.
What inspires you to get out of bed each day?
I love life.
When you're not writing, how do you spend your time?
I have lots of college homework, housework, mom work, and crazy cats to keep me busy.
How do you discover the ebooks you read?
I find ebooks by browsing or by word of mouth. I am new to ebook readers but I enjoy the ease of using them.
Do you remember the first story you ever wrote?
The first story I ever wrote was a writing assignment for my 6th grade language arts class. It was about an animal who had to cross the road without getting hit by cars. I didn't keep any of my assignments from that class and I regret it now.
What is your writing process?
I start with an idea. Then I make a plot summary and a chapter outline. After that I just start writing and let the story come out as it will. After I have a rough draft I start adding more detail and back story until I am comfortable with it. I usually let my children read an early draft to get their feedback.
Do you remember the first story you ever read, and the impact it had on you?
Wow, that's a tough question. I would have been around five, and I read so much I don't remember any one book standing out except for "Green Eggs and Ham" by Dr. Seuss. The first book that really got my attention was "The Hobbit", and I have been hooked on fantasy and medieval adventure ever since.
How do you approach cover design?
For each of my series I have a general theme in mind. For Lorinathas Adventures I tried to find a background picture for a particular scene that evoked the mood I was looking for. In Stolen Heritage I tried to incorporate a design that best represents the spirit and colors of each flag or crest for the kingdom in which the story takes place.
What are your five favorite books, and why?
This is another tough question. So many of the books I read are series. How do I pick just one from each? My first favorite book is The Hobbit, because it was my introduction to fantasy and hooked me immediately. Lord of the Rings follows closely after that because it's the sequel and I love the characters. Another favorite series is the Faded Sun trilogy, a science fiction story. It reads similarly to a fantasy epic journey, but it has a futuristic twist. The suspense in the book just wouldn't let me stop reading. The Wheel of Time is the longest series I have been hooked on, and I love it for the vast story and memorable characters. I read fast, too fast sometimes, and finish books too soon. This series let me dig in and stay for awhile. Sometimes I would get so wrapped up I felt like I was in the story and the characters were like good friends. The most recent favorite book I have read is Elantris by Brandon Sanderson. I strongly related to many of the experiences the characters went through, and it helped me to deal with some similar issues.
What do you read for pleasure?
I mostly read fantasy, medieval adventure, and some dystopia. My daughter also brings random books home from school and says "Read this!" So, I do just to keep track of her preferences.
What is your e-reading device of choice?
I have a rooted Kindle fire given to me as a present. I use it for nearly everything I read.
Describe your desk
I usually use a laptop now, so my lap is my desk! But my official desk is a computer cart in the living room where I keep my writing supplies.
When did you first start writing?
I first started writing in sixth grade. My language arts teacher presented a unit on short stories and assigned us to write. I enjoyed it so much and had so much positive feedback from her that I decided this was what I wanted to do with my life. I got a late start, but I am finally pursuing that career.
