Interview with Laura Morgan

Published 2014-06-26.
When did you first start writing?
Well, I was writing pretty good stuff in first grade, but I didn't write my first book until 4th grade. We all have dreams. Imagination is a beautiful thing. I fell in love with words early. They're beautiful.
What's the story behind your latest book?
About a year ago, I was thinking over the amount of logging and mining going on in my community. This started into thinking about how much we can really take from our planet before something bad happens. And, who would come to the rescue if we did mortally wound Mother Earth. It all stemmed from that one thought.
What is the greatest joy of writing for you?
That would have to be making the readers love the story and characters. That's success.
What are you working on next?
I'm working on the second book to the trilogy.
What inspires you to get out of bed each day?
The beauty of the world around me.
When you're not writing, how do you spend your time?
When I'm not working? Playing music or trying to be a painter. Or, I'm hanging out with my sister and listening, because she stimulates my brain and imagination.
Do you remember the first story you ever wrote?
Yes. It was a fantasy tale. And, I made a red velvet cover for it.
What is your writing process?
Right now, it's very hard. I work during the week, so getting in the head space of my story world enough to write it down takes discipline. Ideas run through my head at random times, so my writing doesn't always begin in order. I write them down and if they expand into entire scenes, then chapters and new ideas, they work.
Describe your desk
A recliner in my office surrounded by walls of notes.
What do you read for pleasure?
The Dark series.
Where did you grow up, and how did this influence your writing?
Growing up in Kentucky definitely gives someone the surroundings for an imagination. I think the woods have given me more than I can ever give back. I've traveled a lot, but I always come back to the beauty of Kentucky. It's definitely not about the great politics. It's still mostly untouched by the concrete and metal, so it's a place where you write about the woods and mountains.
