Interview with LL Lemke

Describe your desk
My desk is pretty basic - dark wood with a couple drawers and shelves. I have a bunch of figures up on top of it. CC from Code Geass, Edgar Allan Poe, Shakespeare, some Gundam 00 characters, the Arbiter from Halo, some Assassin's Creed characters, and a whole bunch of mini My Little Pony figures. There's also books. Lots of books. Mainly figures though.
Where did you grow up, and how did this influence your writing?
I grew up in Oconomowoc, WI. I think that growing up here has made me want to have adventures in my mind...and eventually I just started writing those adventures down.
When did you first start writing?
I started making a conscious effort to write stories when I was about 11. I was really, really bad at finishing anything, though.
What motivated you to become an indie author?
Mainly impatience. I'm horribly, horribly impatient. The big factor, though, was doing something for myself. I was tired of sitting around and waiting while agents turned down my manuscripts, so I just took all the power into my own hands.
What is the greatest joy of writing for you?
Breathing life into characters and telling their stories.
What do your fans mean to you?
The world. If I ever had someone come up and say they were a fan of my work, I honestly might faint or burst into tears of joy.
What are you working on next?
I'm currently working on the next book in the Opus series, Opus Crescendo.
Who are your favorite authors?
Neil Gaiman, Chuck Palahnuik, Jasper Fforde, Philip K. Dick...the list goes on and on and on.
When you're not writing, how do you spend your time?
I'm a martial artist! I teach over at Lake Country Martial Arts. I help out in the basic classes and in the coming month, I'll be starting an adaptive martial arts class for special needs students and a weekly poomsae review seminar.
How do you discover the ebooks you read?
Amazon and Smashwords. I look in the genres I like and start picking out the free ones. If they sound interesting, I pick them up. I might not read them right away, but I have intentions of reading all the ones I pick up!
Do you remember the first story you ever wrote?
Ugh yes. It was TERRIBLE. It was me trying to write a magical girl story because I was really into Sailor Moon. I still toy with re-working it entirely because I'm still a huge fan of Sailor Moon.

Maybe some day.
What do you read for pleasure?
I love reading science fiction and fantasy! But I'm up for reading just about anything. Right now I'm working through The Romance of the Three Kingdoms.
