Interview with La'Von Gittens

Published 2013-10-26.
Do you remember the first story you ever wrote?
Yes! I was about 14 year old I think. I drew the whole thing too! It was a first person series, staring a kitten that was adopted into the perfect family, who just moved into the perfect house... that was built over a Native American burial ground. As the only creature who could see ghosts Miles fights ghosts while staying out of trouble and trying not to get blamed for the antics of poltergeists.
What is your writing process?
It always begins with a two and a half hour Beyonce session. Don't ask me what that means, you just have to be here when it happens. Then, I settle down into a nest I create out of junk food, red bull and virgin sacrifices. Finally, when the "Buddhist Monk" playlist on Pandora settles in, I am ready to slay.
Where did you grow up, and how did this influence your writing?
I was raised all over New York and parts of Trinidad, but spent most of my years on the hardcore streets of Brooklyn. Sometimes it gets so lonely here. You have to fend for yourself! Everyone you meet is out of their minds! They talk in circles and even repeat nonsense. Sometimes it gets so lonely here!
When did you first start writing?
Honestly, I was born a writer. I remember drawing and writing little stories ever since I was young. They were mostly about cute little animals running from snakes and alligators... Hmm... I wonder what Freud would say about that.
What is the greatest joy of writing for you?
I write mostly because therapists are too expensive.
What do your fans mean to you?
My fans are the fuel behind my drive. I've often opened up fan mail, and was brought to tears by some of the letters. I work really hard to make you guys happy and it's amazing when my hard work is appreciated. I always figured that if I have at least one person who loved my series as much as I did the works of my heroes, then I would die happy; I am lucky enough to have a few.
What are you working on next?
"Divine Apocalypse: Perdition"
Graphic Novel:
"Divine Apocalypse: Post Apocalyptic Stress Books: 1-12"
What inspires you to get out of bed each day?
Beyonce.
When you're not writing, how do you spend your time?
As a story teller by nature, so when I'm not writing, I tend to still be entertaining, whether it be through acting, dancing or flipping backwards.
Describe your desk
It's a mess, but there is a method to my madness.
What's the story behind your latest book?
Paranoia. Delusion. Anxiety. Loneliness. Living in the cut throat city of Manhattan can feel like a daily war. But when the new year rekindles the ageless clash between Heaven and Hell, four angels born as men are awakened. Neil Maillen, a young and successful journalist, prepares for the birth of his son and a stressful new life when he discovers he possesses super human abilities.
As a Sacred Angel, he teams up with Aurora, a sassy model, Amanda, a bipolar blonde and Ezekiel, a self-conscious artist to form the Descended Radiance: the fist of God.
Dragged into a terrifying reality of demons, monsters and mystifying strangers, it is suddenly their responsibility to defeat the Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse. As Heaven and Hell use Earth as a battleground, can the four save the World while battling their even more ferocious inner demons?
