Interview with Lawguycr

What is your writing process?
Typically I like to write an entire chapter at once. I feel the flow goes much better if I don't start and stop mid stream. I generally will have a specific topic in mind and will start to flesh that out. The story tends to organically emerge and there are typically not a ton of edits that I make after I'm done. Oh sure, there will be a few, but not wholesale changes, just typically some tweaks. On the occasions that I'm just not feeling it and struggling to write, I give up and tackle it another day. Sometimes i go back to the same idea, sometimes I scrap it and start with something different. This works for me because I do not write long stories. Short stories and/or distinct chapters tend to fit better into my model, so that's what i stick with.
When you're not writing, how do you spend your time?
I occupy myself by reading other authors, spending time with my dogs, and juggling my wife and two girlfriends (that's basically a full time job right there!). Everyone knows about everyone else, it is totally cool. I'm also a huge NFL junkie and spend a good amount of time reading about and watching pro football.
What are your five favorite books, and why?
I have to list five series, not individual books.
1. The Dresden Files by Jim Butcher. A wizard who is also a detective, what's not to like? Dresden is my favorite literary character of all time. His strength of will and personal moral code are amazing. The stories are so nuanced and well done, i just love them.
2. The Iron Druid series by Kevin Hearne. Hilariously combining mythology and copious amounts of laugh out loud jokes, these are a delight to read. I love mythology so this one was an easy choice. Also, I really dig the talking dog sidekick, that just rocks.
3. The Otherworld series by Yasmine Galenorn. I adore books about magic and this has lots of sorcery and magical creatures. Each book is written from the perspective of one of the three sisters (on a rotation) and each have their own personal vibes. Plus, each book has usually at least two or three really hot sex scenes.
4. Dragonlance books by Margaret Weis and Tracy Hickman. Character development, that is all. These two consistently create characters i really care about, which shows the skill of their writing. The first two trilogies by them I've read about ten times, they never get old.
5. Game of Thrones by George R. R. Martin. I am astounded he can create, manage, (and seemingly kill) tens of new characters each novel. The man has a skill with detail that just can't be matched. The books are beasts but worth the time it takes to get through them.
Just missing the cut: Lord of the Rings and Harry Potter.
What's the story behind your latest book?
Educating Amy is about a bored housewife who decides she needs to expand her sexual horizon and enlists her online friend Jason to guide her to new avenues of pleasure. The concept came from a friend of mine on Facebook who was tired of not being appreciated at home and fell in love with the idea of being pursued like she was when she was younger. I suggested I'd write her some erotic stories and she gave me a few topics she would like to read about. This book is published with her permission and the names have been changed to protect the naughty.
What is the greatest joy of writing for you?
I consider my writing to be in two distinct arenas. One is the stories I write for particular people and the other is what I publish. Educating Amy sort of bridges the two. For me, the greatest joy is having someone tell me they read my words and were severely turned on (since most of what i write is erotica). Knowing that I can give someone pleasure through my writing brings me a great sense of accomplishment. I did not start this thinking I'd become rich and famous. I write for the enjoyment of it. If I can make a buck or two as well, so much the better.
What do you read for pleasure?
I am a purely fiction person. Most of what I read is in the fantasy/sword and sorcery genre. Reading about magic has always fascinated me. I have to admit I am a fan of paranormal romance/urban fantasy. That kind of stuff just sort of does it for me. I also enjoy reading erotica because I'm a randy middle aged man. Given my love of magic, it is no shock that I write about sex. After all, isn't sex the best magic in our world?
What motivated you to become an indie author?
That's kind of a funny story. I was complaining to one of my swinger friends about a bad experience I had with another woman where I thought she behaved inappropriately. My friend agreed with me that this was not right and jokingly said i should write a set of rules for swingers to follow. On a lark, I decided to take her up on the idea. At that time, my wife was working second shift, so I had tons of free time in the evenings. I would sit and write for an hour or two each night while I waited for her to get home. After a time, I had written a short book (around 50 pages or so). Another friend suggested I publish it as an e book and told me about Smashwords. The lesson here is be careful what you suggest people do, some of them are crazy enough to do it!
What are you working on next?
I started a sequel to Educating Amy, I hope there is demand for it. I have many decadent and naughty ideas about new erotic experiences for our heroine. Some of them may be based on real experiences I've been a part of while others are purely fantasy.
How do you approach cover design?
The short answer is I punt. I have a very talented cover designer I've worked with and I give her a general idea of what I want. She goes out and grabs amazing images for me. I have had to request different fonts on occasion, but by and large she does an amazing job getting what I want from the descriptions I give her.
